Producing Low Voltage
By Stephen E.

Review Posted 09/16/2017
What do I have to do to get my guardian 17,500 watt guardian ultra source generator repaired? I believe I overloaded it. After running a majority of my home after the hurricane for about 20 minutes, power went out but motor kept running, without tripping a breaker and is now only producing 40 volts. I read the manual and it tells me to call a factory certified service and when I did they told me I blew it up over the phone without even looking at it to diagnose. I need to get it fixed as the next hurricane is on its way. Please help

To diagnose the issue, you'll have to bring the generator to a Generac service center. Generac Dealer Locator

Would buy it again!

I purchased this genny new-in-the-box in 2013. Can run the whole house. I keep about 80 gal of stabilized no-ethanol gas. Of course you must rotate the gas but with 3 oz of stabil per 5 gal it will be fine for 9-10 months.

It takes me about 5 mins to have power to the whole house including central air!

The only cons of course is fuel consumption, also no hr meter, and no wattage meter.

I use an hr meter that does not require a battery and it powers from the DC 12V outlet on the control panel.

Now if I could only find a way to read wattage output without having to open switch box.

Glad I Got It.

I got one of these on sale for under $2000 -- I knew about the circut issue (15KW on one, 2.5 on the other) but that didn't bother me. I wired it in to a kohler auto-switching panel and we couldn't be happier. The thing still starts easily and we have over 200 hours on it. It's been abused too -- left out in the rain with a tarp over it... Still starts and generates fine. I am floored by the reliability of this thing. We have meters to let us know when we get close to 15KW -- and we can get right up there (14.5) and the generator doesn't sound too strained. At 15 it starts to sound strained. Too bad they discontinued this.. I was going to buy a second for our cabin.

100 hours and still running strong!
By Mike Stuart

Review Posted 08/06/2009
We live in California and are not prone to hurricanes, but we do encounter earthquakes on occasion (in '94 we were without power for over 2 weeks).

The UltraSource 4583 does double duty as I use it daily during the summer to supply power to a 5 horse pump, 340 feet underground that serves my well on a 40 acre parcel we own.

I've followed the maintenence schedules to a "T" and the only problem I've encountered was 1 leg of the 30 amp circuit breaker was kicking off after about one half hour of use. Unless I was standing by, the unit would keep running but the pump was shut off- thus wasting gas. I replaced the breaker and converted the well plug to a 50 amp outlet and solved the problem.

It would be nice for the unit to come standard with an hour meter. I installed one before I even started it for the first time in order keep an accurate accounting of the running hours between oil changes.

All in all, a great generator for the price and one I would strongly recommend to anyone looking for maximum power in a portable generator.

Need dependable generator for more than one year
By David Franks

Review Posted 07/20/2009
I had a starter problem within the first six months, and the Generac repair center got me a replacement. They told me that it is not an uncommon problem on this style starter.

The battery went out at approximately eighteen months. I replaced it and installed trickle charger.

It is now six months after the warranty is up, and the idle control is not working. I spoke with the Generac repair center this morning, and they said the idle control board is probably out. That's $295 for the part and they are out of stock for a week or two.

I used the unit the last two Saturdays previous to my calling them.

It ran well for last hurricane season.

Good generator, bad battery.

My model 4583 generator works great so far, but the battery that came with it was no good. It was completely dead and would not take a charge.

Electric Generators Direct told me to call Generac and Generac gave me the run-around. They told me that none of their generators include batteries. I gave up and bought a new battery for it.

We're in the middle of the worst ice storm we've ever had, and will probably be depending on this generator for weeks. Hopefully it will continue to perform as it has so far.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused! We should have advised you to call your local dealer for a warranty replacement battery, instead of contacting Generac. We will contact you privately to make restitution.

It Isn't Painted The Color Of a LEMON For Nothing
By James R. Jr.

Purchased 12/15/2008 |
Review Posted 12/21/2008
It is a very simple lemon story. The sale and delivery on my Guardian MN: 4583 Generator Systems was made promptly by Electric Generators Direct to my home via freight delivery on 12/19/2008. I set-up the Guardian 4583 generator on 12/20/2008 per specifications in the owner manual, and ran the generator for 30 minutes. The following day 12/21/2008 I was showing my wife how to start the system up. Well the motor barely cranked over once, and after that the starter was the only part that would turn and spin. The crank shaft was seized, and could not be turned either by hand or with leverage.

I called two of the local Guardian service centers in my area and the following is the response that I received to my calls. The first place never returned my phone call. The second service center would not be able to pick up the system till the following Monday 12/22/2008 at a cost to me of $80.00. I will be more than a week to repair a brand new system. In the mean time living in New Hampshire we had one of the worst ice storms the previous weekend, and were without power, water, or sanitation for three days (We were one of the lucky ones that got their power back that soon!!!). Now on Sunday 12/21/2008 we will be waiting out another Nor'easter that will be dumping up to fourteen inches of snow with high winds to follow. On top of the foot of snow we got on Friday 12/19/2008. Well so much for having a working generator to depend on if the power goes out again.

Well, my story is a little different. I bought this generator after Hurricane Ike, put the wheels and handle on, added oil and gasoline, and started it up. It up it ran for 30 minutes and threw a rod.

I've called Generac to replace it but they keep telling me to take it to a service center. The problem with that is that all of the service centers are booked due to the storm, repairing chain saws and other generators. In my opinion this generator is a piece of crap.

Once an engine has been fueled, it is against Federal Law to ship it. We realize it is not convenient, but you will need to take it to Generac Authorized Service for the repair.

Life After Ike
By Richard Bielby
Santa Fe, Texas
Review Posted 09/27/2008
The eye of Hurricane Ike passed right over my house. We were witout power for 10 days, but I had purchased the generator and had the service disconnect installed a year earlier.

It ran most of the house with ease, but the genny can be somewhat of a fuel hog when there isn't any gas around. I would recommend keeping 40-50 gallons of gasoline stored so you don't run out, or running the generator for 3-4 hours then shutting it off for 2-3 to save fuel.

By only running it a few hours at a time we were able to keep the food in the refridgerator cold and freezer frozen in addition to stretching the tank life to 24 hours.

Because of this generator's ability to handle the load of the water pump and water softener in as well as the house AC and 6 rooms I was able to supply water to all of my neighbors.

The only problems I had were 2 bolts that hold the heat shield over the exhaust vibrated loose, and the motor under load is very loud.
