Unit is reliable. Make sure your white power wire are connected tightly or the unit will click a lot and not power up.

Glitching LCD Panel

Has issues with LCD screen glitching. Fuses are pricey, and not readily available from stores. These are fast acting fuses, not time delay like lowes carries.

Good Automatic Upgrade To Manual Switch
By Perry M.
Adelphia, New Jersey
Purchased 11/09/2020 |

Very good construction, programmable (easy), installation easy, features good. Excellent monitoring and display board. Prewired so that you only need to remove the wire from each individual circuit breaker, wire nut that to one of the pre fab wire harness wires, then put the matching wire from the harness to the breaker. Very fast installation. Since it is automatic, it is good for a portable genset since it will not transfer until the generator is up, running and connected, then it will switch after a short delay.
Only thing I did not like is it has fuses behind the screwed on cover. Yes a light will indicate which fuse fails, but you need tools to open the cover and change the fuse. That fuse will blow in any situation since it is now inline with the circuit breaker for that circuit.

This transfer switch allows you to set times for all appliances to be on and off allowing for an additional possible, 20 percent more generator capacity. Allows you to set for the size generator to help not overload your generator(s). Great product

Easy To Install, and Even Easier To Use!

I wanted the features of an automatic transfer switch while using a portable generator due to the infrequency of outages we have and lack of a gas source.
This unit is great, straightforward install, no issues. Gave it a test run and worked as expected. Cut power to the house to simulate a power outage, went outside and plugged in the generator, after a few seconds, the load started on the generator and the lights cycled on in the house.
I only wish they made a 16 or 20 circuit version and one that could handle more than one 240v circuit so we could run the stove and the well pump.
Considering manual 10 circuit transfer switches are only $100-200 cheaper I’d buy this no question, gives me peace of mind that my spouse can easily power up the house if I’m not around. Electric start the generator, warm up, plug in and go back inside for 8-10hrs until gas needs adding.
I’ve read the reviews warning about the fuses blowing, but I have a newer house with circuits that are sufficiently sized and not over loaded so I’m not concerned, but I still bought a few replacement fuses and a puller just in case.

This transfer switch is great!
There is one fault with it's setup when it arrives:
That is that it is shipped with 15A fast blow fuses, and if you are running circuits with 20A you will be hard pressed to find them locally or if you do they will be about $10 each. I can't understand why they are not shipped with 20A fuses.
Other than that great product and great support

Something happened with the solid state for circuits 9 and 10 just like the one I had before, but at least the first one lasted a few years, this one barely lasted a couple of months.

The Best Value In A 10 Circuit Transfer Switch
By Dave H.
Yarmoutrh, Maine
Review Posted 11/04/2017
I have had this transfer switch installed for 9 years. I was the first customer in the state and purchased directly from APC. I can say the best feature is the use of a UPS as a second power source. We have a lighting circuit configured so that when the power goes out we have all the ceiling lights in the house that work. This gives us the 20 minutes we need to roll out the generator outdoors and connect it to the outdoor connection. No flashlights required to get generator started. The ability of this smart unit to disconnect loads when we need to use the microwave or coffee pot is tremendous. It is true that this switch allows us to automatically supporting 20 to 30% more load than our generator capability.
One serious design defect is that APC uses fuses and expensive ones at that. There should be no reason that we should blow a fuse while on utility power. Over the years I have blown 6. Never when using the generator. An end user should not be required to open a potentially live electrical panel to change a fuse. Very poor implementation for an excellent designed product.
After 6 years we have one circuit that has a single bad relay. The Circuit operates fine on utility power but will not receive power when connected to generator. All 30 relays are soldered to motherboard. I called APC support and their solution was for us to purchase a replacement transfer switch.A lot of work instead of swapping a plug-in relay on a circuit board.
Would I buy this switch again, most likely for the advanced functions (as long as fuse replacement is not an issue). Having automatic lights come on when the power fails is something no other product does in the portable generator implementation.

TIRED OF REPLACING FUSES

I purchased this transfer switch at the same time I bought a Honda EU6500 generator from PED. Prior to installation of this APC by a qualified electrician, we never had issues with tripping circuits in the main panel. After installation, when my wife would plug in her hair dryer, we would occasionally blow a fuse inside the APC unit. On each occasion it would require me to open the front APC panel (six screws) and replace a 15 or 20 amp fuse at $10.00 each. A master electrician was called and indicated that none of our electrical circuits were overloaded.
Despite adjusting the APC sensitive settings, the unit continued to periodically blow internal fuses. In fact, the APC website has comments from an individual who indicated that he blew a fuse when his nightlight bulb went out. The auto load shedding is great concept, but very poor design/engineering. Have no idea why APC selected fuses over breakers and why the unit is overly sensitive.
Sadly, the APC unit has become the problem as it created more power issues then our previous storms. Planning on tossing this in the trash and buying a manual switch (with breakers).

If your wife is using a GFI-Typle outlet, which most bathroom outlets are, it could be the outlet causing the problem. GFIs wear out over time and can cause issues as they age.

I had an electrician install this unit 2 years ago, it works flawlessly. We had a new home heating system being installed and it read a fault in their wiring job which the electrician eventually found. You will have to purchase backup 20 and 30 amp barrel fuses just I case and the only flaw I have found is I wish they manufacturer had put a swing hinge door on the face. So when you do have to change a fuse you don't have to unscrew 6 screws. Would I recommend this to my mother? Absolutely!

How can it be that this whole house APC (32315-UTS10BI) transfer switch is not UL certified. That may be a deal breaker for insurance reasons. Is there a way around this situation? Thank you, Steve
