Very well built and powerful mower
By Paul

Review Posted 07/01/2011
I have no prior experience with riding mower's and just moved to a 4 acre lot. The cost of paying someone to mow for the season was greater than buying a zero turn mower. I did a lot of research and saw that mower's direct offered the best price for the brands they carried and with Ariens being three generations owned I didn't have to worry about any change in quality.
This mower is everything I expected. It is very maintenance friendly with easy access to the air filter right on top and oil filter on the side. It also has an extension hose on thrill drain for easier oil changes. The hydro pumps are easy to see the levels and oil filters are still accessible with a band wrench. I would say the directions need to change saying use a half inch wrench not a nine sixteenths. Other than that it was follow the instructions and it guided you through the entire machine.
Operation was very pleasing with dampening on the controls to prevent jerking and taking time to understand it's capabilities. You definitely have to take it slow on turning as the tires operate like a track and if you go too fast it leaves a mark. But with both hands forward this thing takes off even up hill. I am very satisfied my first time mowing my four acre lot took less than two hours which wad also my first time mowing on a riding mower. I look forward to mowing again and that saying something.

Excellent Mower

Great mower, great value. Easy to use and fast. I have 2 acres of flat open ground with maybe 20 pine trees and I mowed it in about 50 minutes. So far, I am very happy and would recommend this mower to anyone.

I love this mower

I love this mower and it's performance is outstanding. The rear tires are very thin rubber and I experienced a puncture which cost $5 for a plug repair.
I'd love to have a backup key for the mower and accept the $6 price, but could you please send it USPS for $.44 in a business envelope and not ship it for $12 (which is ridiculous).
The Ariens mower is everything I expected and more.

I have only used this mower for six hours and have found it so far to be excellent.
It also cuts better and much faster than my garden tractor that I had been using.
The riding comfort is great. I'm seventy-five years so I need all the comfort I can get.

My New Mower
By Lynn Wood
Salisbury, Maryland
Purchased 05/25/2010 |
Review Posted 06/16/2010
It does everything but mow well . I think the deck must be out of balance. It runs smooth at the high speed but rough at the low speed.
The weather has been dry dry so the grass is not growing. It leaves behind so much grass I have to go over the same area 3 times to get it even.
I have called Ariens directly and they said the deck must be too high in front. It is as if the blades are super dull.
I hope I can resolve this without taking it to a dealer- as a single woman with lots of horses and children I don't have time for things that don't work.

Tremendous Time Saver
By Kevin
Liberty Twp., Ohio

What a difference! We have always used the traditional tractor-type lawn mower to cut our 3+ acres. It usually took at least 2 different days to get through the job a total of 5 or 6 hrs of solid mowing, depending on how long the grass was to begin with.
When the grass was extra long, it was necessary to "nibble" away by making only partial width passes so the mower would not bog down. When I ordered the Ariens, both of our mowers had quit cutting and the grass got very high.
I ordered the Ariens on a Tuesday and received it on that Friday!! It took me about an hour to uncrate, read the directions and assemble the few parts that needed put together, and I was ready to roll.
I got on and fired it up, and within a few minutes I was cutting grass like a pro. My wife, who needed to be convinced that a zero-turn was the way to go, did not think she wanted to drive anything that did not have a steering wheel.
She got on it, now it's HER mower! We have cut the entire place 3 times since we got it (a little over 2 weeks ago) and I have yet to cut the entire place. She and my son have taken it over! They can cut everything in half the time it took using the other mowers.
This mower cuts a 54" swath through tall grass at full speed, our other 46" mower needed to go slow, cutting only about two thirds of a full swath to get through it. Needless to say, we are very happy with the Ariens mower.
It cost a little more than I really wanted to pay, but comparing it with similar zero-turn mowers, it was a good deal. I could have bought the same mower at a big box store for about $50 less but, after tax, it would have cost about $210 more. Since the shipping was free and I would have probably had to pay a delivery fee from a local store, I saved there too.
It has some features found on the more expensive commercial models such as a heavier fabricated deck, and a Kawasaki Engine. The mower itself is heavier than many of the same sized residential grade mowers and with a top speed of 7mph, we can fly through our cutting job.
While not as fast as some of the commercial grade mowers, this one really goes about as fast as I care to go, our yard is too bumpy to go much faster.
At this point of our ownership experience, the Ariens gets our overwhelming approval for quality and value. I plan on keeping up on the maintenance so hopefully this mower will be a faithful workhorse for years to come.
Ask me about it again in a few years!

Starts up great, but the grass won't grow fast enough, so I haven't had the pleasure to mow yet!
Hopefully this weekend, April 2nd & 3rd, I should be able to turn the Ariens loose! I'll be sure to give you an update!!!

Happy Overall
By Tony Potter
Wallis, Texas

Review Posted 02/17/2010
The mower arrived as scheduled, but I was led to believe only the seat had to be attached once the mower was removed from the crate.
In fact, the seat was attached; but the battery was disconnected and the steering arms need to be moved, so the information from Mowers Direct was not accurate.
I was also told that the unit would not arrive in an 18 wheeler, which in fact it did- and made moving the crate very hard due to my driveway. I had explained this to the sales person when I ordered.
I had to call Ariens about a small problem and it was handled very quickly and professionally.
Overall I was happy with my purchase and would buy again from Mowers Direct now that I know what questions to ask.

Thank you for the feedback! We have updated our files about the packaging of the mower.
The usual delivery process has the unit shipped by 18 wheeler to your local terminal, where the dispatcher sets up the delivery appointment and, for most residential deliveries, sends out a smaller truck to drop off the unit.
Even though we had tagged your order as "truck will need to back into driveway", but the dispatcher saw the commercial address and left it on the 18 wheeler truck.
We apologize for the inconvenience, and are working with our carriers for better communication.
