Totally unreliable in every way

I have a 22,000 sf lawn, about 40 minutes worth, supposedly.

Purchased from Mowers Direct in September 2010 for all the right reasons. On first use the Amp riding mower wouldn't operate for more than a few seconds at a time, so it immediately went into the warranty-servicer. After much dickering with Amp/Ariens and the intervention of Mowers Direct, Amp/Ariens agreed that the servicer should replace the 5-pack batteries and charger, which had to come from Wisconsin to Florida and took two months.

Still the mower seldom took a full charge, and rarely did the charge-gauge reflect battery strength. In the last 18 months, the mower has, in fits and starts, cut my lawn maybe 20 times. Plus the blades are all but impossible to remove for sharpening. As of today, the Amp Rider is good for perhaps 5 minutes of use on any given day. I'm thankful that I have my Homelite battery push-mower as backup, because that is how I have to cut the grass most of the time. It's a lot of work to push-cut 22,000sf, but the exercise is beneficial, and the Homelite mower gets the job done.

As the warranty-servicer said to me, this is a scaled-down golf cart with blades, one would think a big equipment manufacturer could make a battery-powered riding mower which actually functions. Fortunately for the public, the Amp Rider has been discontinued.

Exactly as advertised

Last weekend, mid-job, the left hydrostatic drive on my Cub i1046 died. I went looking for a new mower, and the Amp caught my eye. I hate hauling gas cans in my car, and I am not fond of $4 gas either. A lack of belts and a quieter mower sounded good too.

On Wednesday, I had decided. I checked Mowers Direct, they had one in stock. I ordered it via the website, and I got it the next day. Wow. Plugged it in overnight, and let it charge the required 16 hours for the first charge.

My lawn is an oddly shaped acre, full of trees, slopes and hills. It did the job in 50 minutes, with 30-40% charge left on the clock. Another reviewer here said it wasn't powerful, but I have my doubts he actually tried this mower. Up and down hills, semi-deep grass in spots (like I said, the Cub died mid-job), no issue. A real nice cut from the deck too.

They say it's half as loud as a gas mower. I think it's quieter than that.

Is it a 60" zero turn monster? NO! It's a nice small riding mower, for a reasonable price, with zero upkeep until the batteries need replacing in 5 years-ish. Who knows what battery technology will be like by then? (Hint- A lot better). So if a gas mower like this would work for your lawn, there are zero compromises in owning this mower.

Awesome Job, Ariens. And Mowers Direct is excellent. Great price, delivered quicker than a local store. Awesome.

If one isn't able to "think" beyond their box, they probably don't get how great an advance this is.

I doubt the guy from NJ actually got to try one out, or at least shouldn't have compared it to an actual lawn tractor.

I have an acre+ and this electric mower does a great job on a single charge.

Prior to this unit I ran a Black & Decker cordless push mower and did my lawn in sections, as it's 19" path didn't cover as much in an hour to 90 minuntes which is what I averaged per charge.

How to Quietly Cut Your Grass
By Jon Hoch, Founder

review 4 video
When I was a kid, my next door neighboor always cut his grass at the worst time of the week -- during Saturday morning cartoons.

I'd shut the windows and crank up the volume, but the noise- and air-polluting lawn mowers still drowned out Scooby Doo.

To make matters worse, my neighbor was older and slower. It took him 2-3 times longer to cut his lawn.

I'd always missing the fantastic finish... if it weren't for those meddling kids.

Zoinks!

Now, imagine if my neighboor had an electric scooter that actually cut the grass...

No more smokey engine. No more excessive noise. No more effort.

If my neighboor had an Ariens Amp electric riding lawn mower, I'd actually volunteer to cut his grass!

It is cooler than the Mystery Machine!

Electric Slide

Save your money- this is a gutless wonder.

I got to try one out. Even on a flat lawn it has barely enough power to get out of it's own way. What you think you will save in fuel will be more than made up in your time.

Nice idea, but bad implementation.
