Get Rid Of Briggs & Stratton - Bring Back The Honda!
By Billy V.
Tennessee
Review Posted 07/30/2023
I bought a Billy Goat 20 years ago with a Honda engine and it is still running great! However, I rented a 'new' BC2600ICM that has a B&S engine and it almost killed me. First, the starter cord was broken when I went to pick it up. (Not good for an almost new mower!) It was repaired, but when starting, the compressing yanked my arm back to the mower. It then started and I used it a couple of times, being very careful about how I pulled. It repeatedly got stuck on a major compression in the engine and yanked my arm violently back before it would start. Finally, the starter mechanism failed spitting out a plastic cog which I am sure engages the motor when the cord is pulled.

When it got started, the Billy Goat mower performed wonderfully. The only exception was, when the motor failed, it was impossible to move the mower because the transmission locks up the wheels. GET RID OF BRIGGS & STRATTON!!

Needed A Heavy Duty Mower
By Robert H.

We needed help with tall brush in the barn yard and clearing trails in the woods for the ATVs. Although expensive we have been very satisfied with the performance of the Billy Goat. Only used it for 4 hours but was able to cover a lot of ground in that time.

Works as advertised.

Easy to operate once started.

Instructions on the assembly (which is really just attaching the peripheral pieces and hooking up the cables) could have been clearer.

Trouble starting it with the cord but hopefully this will get easier as it breaks in. It seems so better with a very full tank of gas when starting it the first time for the day once it’s been running it starts right back up very easily.

Again, no long term use to share but very happy with the purchase so far.

The Blade Is Too High

I'm a lady and I have horse property in Arizona. Monson season here brings about 26" of rain during summer. I have owned 4 Cub Cadet walk-behind string trimmers. I love that machine, however they break down, and the last one lasted 40 minutes before it started smoking and quit. It was returned. Apparently, they are now made with a cheap engine and plastic parts. So I treated myself to this mower! A forever mower to cut trails and groom my ranch with. Well, it's very hard to maneuver for me, you can't turn this thing at all. And it cuts so high nothing looks very mowed! It leaves everything way too high. I also mow around my main property, barns, arena, RV camping area, but it never looks groomed. So I am trying to sell it at a $1000.00 loss. It's been listed for 2 weeks now. It only has an hour of run time, it's still clean and shiny, I hope I can sell it soon so I can buy something else. It is easy to start, I'll give it that.

The "Billy Goat" Is Very Well Built To Mow Brush

Was easy to un-crate and assemble. After putting oil in the engine, it was easy to start. I mowed a 1/2 acre of brush in less than an hour. The Billy Goat has plenty of power and uses very little gas.

Good Solid Brush Mower

While I do have a tractor with a 5-foot brush hog, I found that the brush hog could only get into 20% of the area that I need to control. Taking the brush hog off and on the tractor PTO is a serious amount of work. I wanted something that my wife and daughter could use. They love the Billy Goat, not too difficult for them to use, being 35 and 60 years old. They are very fit though. They affectionately refer to it as "The Goat". They can both start it with the pull cord. I really did not want another battery to maintain.

I bought the lower-cost model that uses a Briggs and Straton motor, rather than their standard Honda. I find that it is just fine, never bogs down in the nasty brush. The Briggs supports 15-degree hills, while the Honda can do 20 degrees, something to think about. Briggs does now own Billy Goat now, so I felt the B&S motor was fine to go with.

The bigger question is whether to buy the hydrostatic version, I did not buy it. I can see that in tight hilly spaces the hydrostatic version would be of great help. Is it worth an extra $1,000? Just not sure. The cost and complexity of the hydrostatic system swayed me away from it. The non-hydrostatic version is very functional. I bet though if I actually tried one I would likely love it. Tough call.

The Billy Goat is a great product! The beast has some heft to it so be prepared for a good work out.

Very Happy Customer

I had a hi-wheel mower with a trimmer line and a few Echos, one with a blade and another with the line. I have 4 1/2 acres, and I was losing ground (pun intended) to the weeds and brush. With the hi-mower, it would take about two hours to mow 1/4 acre.

With the Billy Goat, I tear through an acre in about an hour. Much of my property has been mowed. Yes, the weeds are coming back, but owning the mower means I don't have to make the trip to HD to rent it.

The machine starts very easily, usually the first or second pull. The first and second gear is pretty slow, and the third gear is a slow jog. I use all three gears depending on what I am doing. In addition, the reverse works very well.

The only thing that I might consider doing differently is buying the Billy Goat with the Hydro Drive. On uneven ground, I have to rock it a bit to gain traction. The machine is very well balanced, so it's manageable. I'm 57. I'm just wondering if it will still be manageable when I'm 70.

A few mentioned that setup was difficult. I found it straight forward. The only thing that threw me, is that it didn't take as much oil as the manual claimed. A call to MD and they said that there might be some oil in the machine from the factory test. So when you put the oil in it, make sure to do it in increments and check it as you fill it.

This mower will go through anything and not even bog down. I am very impressed with the quality and performance. What used to take me two days now takes an hour. Don't buy the red mower, buy the green one.

Throughly Satisfied With Its Performance

I got it to work around my own house to re-trim year after year. I love gardening and transforming the yard. And this tool just make life so much easier to expand my plans for my yard. Easily moves forward and backwards with little effort on my part. Just wish it had an alternative start instead of the pull chord. But is still is a well worth it piece of equipment if you have briars and other unsightly overgrown brush surrounding your yard. I did in minutes what would have taken me days of back breaking work. Chops up very swiftly and I just let it compost back to the earth. Best investment I’ve made so far.
