Air Compressor Delivery And Installation
By Steven F.

Review Posted 08/28/2024
Air compressor was delivered on time - curbside delivery, though I live about 300 feet from the curbside so it would have been nice if they had driven the 300 feet to the shop instead of setting it at the road. Not a big deal as I have a tractor with forklift bar attachment for the bucket
Upon initial inspection of the Campbell Hausfeld air compressor, everything looked good and was in tact - a slight dent in the fin tube that connects the two pistons on the pump. Really not a big issue and hardly noticeable.
Three issues with the compressor:
First, the metal belt guard had sprung open - after a little inspection it was obvious it was attached incorrectly. The belt guard was mounted too low and shifted toward the motor and the belt guard cover would not close - hits the tank and the top of the tank was scratched up pretty well. I removed the belt guard and reattached it so the cover would close and cleared the top of the tank - I had to re-drill both mounting holes in the pump/motor support to allow the belt guard to shift to the pump side by about 2 inches. The top mounting bolt lined up to a new position in the belt guard grid, so nothing needed modifying there.
Second, the instructions indicated the use of isolator pads part number MP35700AJ. I ordered these off of Amazon as Campbell Hausfeld and Air Compressors Direct don't carry them, (expensive by the way). They arrived and there are three isolators - except my air compressor has four legs. Interesting as there is no indication in the instructions as to the number of legs on the compressor, and all the pictures and figures seem to indicate 3 though only 2 legs are ever shown. Ended up having to purchase four more isolators as you can't seem to buy these things individually. The four isolators were 1/4 the price of the MP35700AJ pads and seemed to be nearly identical.
Third issue surfaced when I went to connect the power to the pressure switch - there are spade connectors included with the pressure switch, which was nice, but the instructions called for 8 AWG wire for a 5 horse power motor. The spade terminals only support 10 AWG. I ran 8 AWG from my fuse panel before I discovered this. Turns out the spade terminals are removable and you can substitute in U connectors attached to the Philips connector screws. This turned out to be a much better electrical attachment then the spade terminals so probably a good failure. Note - the motor wires are 10 AWG.
Motor and pump run quiet-nice unit.

Not So Good

I noticed a small leak coming from the check valve in the top of the tank, thought it was just not sealed well. I took the valve out and it was cross threaded causing the leak. Luckily the threads on the tank were fine. Ordered the new valve from the recommended parts outlet, it says they are on back order it’s been two weeks with no word. Luckily the local farm store had a check valve for black diamond compressors that worked. I don’t want to be that guy but it’s seems like with the quality of things made today you better have the knowledge to fix things yourself.

I've had this compressor for almost a month and still haven't been able to use it...the running cap in the motor went bad immediately..replaced that to find out it still won't work cause the flywheel is bent..the manufacturer will send you parts but it takes 7 to 10 business days...I can't open my doors without a compressor so I had to break down and go buy a whole new one so I stop losing money everyday.

The Compressor Works Great In My Shop

I upgraded from a 3 HP single stage 60 gallon tank compressor that wouldn't supply enough air for my Devilbisss HVLP conversion spray gun. The new compressor powers the gun perfectly!

Not For Autobody

I run a small mechanic shop, and the compressor does not keep up the way I thought it would. The pressure drops down too far without cutting in. If you use your compressor for painting, sanding, or grinding, I would go with a stronger compressor because I got screwed.

Expert Response
We are sorry the compressor is not performing to your standards. We recommend sizing the compressor 1.25-1.5 times the CFM of your tool for continuous operation. If the compressor does not produce enough air volume, CFM, then the pressure will drop. Reciprocating (Piston) compressors are not designed for continuous or 100% duty cycle. The compressor will cycle off & on if it is sized correctly. Just add up the CFM of the air tools that will be in use at the same time to get the minimum CFM required.

Are the 60 & 80 gal compressors in lowes, home depot and tractor supple worth buying. I heard they are like all other equip. they sell. I had experience with a john deere power washer, took it back and got a real deere for $25 more. Found out they are no name made and then put name on it. No problems in 3 yrs. For 650 t0 850 I'd rather spend a little more and get a quality mach.
