Worked Thru 2 Hurricanes And One Tropical Storm.

Don't forget the extension cords x 3. They cost about 35.00 for 50 feet each. Powered the fridge/freezer.fans and one tv. Turn off at night to save gas. You will need at least 5 five gallon gas containers. And two quarts of oil. Running at 6hrs a day. You should be good for 5-7days.

I bought this Coleman PowerMate Pro Gen 5,000 watt used about 10-12 years ago. I used it during a spring flood. It then went into storage. Before I stored it, I added sea foam to the tank. I brought it out for the first time this year. Choked it and it started on the first pull. Never a problem. Works great.

One Shot Of Starting Fluid and Your Good To Go...

Like David said pop off the air cleaner cover give it a quick shot of starting fluid and I guarantee you it will start half way through that first pull. I also recommend you shut of the fuel supply and run it dry before storing it. I've had this unit for 6 years and it has got me through MANY power outages. I have NEVER had an issue when following these procedures. I LOVE THIS UNIT!

Re: Difficulty Starting

You did remember to open the shutoff on the fuel valve, right? The fuel valve is located on the underside of the gas tank and the shutoff must be turned counterclockwise several turns to open. The only time that I have ever had difficulty starting my unit is when I forgot to open the shutoff!

It works fine for me.

I purchased this unit used. The previous owner used the unit a construction site for three months straight.

I have had to use it twice- once during a power outage and once while camping. I have read many posts regarding problems with this unit, but I have not experienced any of them.

I keep the fuel tank full with gas and Sea Foam to keep the fuel system clean. I start the unit at least twice a year BEFORE I actually need it.

As an inexpensive unit it serves its purpose.

Coleman non-starter
By ken leonard

I had the exact same experience with the coleman 5000w - the engine would not start when new.

I checked fuel flow from the hose to the carb. I pulled apart the carb, cleaned it out, put in new, clean gas, checked the spark plug (it seemed like a weak spark but it had one).

I poured a little gas into plug hole, replaced the plug and it started instantly for 3 seconds until the gas was gone. This indicates that the gas is not getting past the carb.

I agree with Mike Davidson. I always have to take the air cleaner cover and filter off and shoot it with a shot of ether (starting fluid) before it will start. In the middle of the night, in a storm, this is a problem.

Other than that, it is a great machine.

When my son sent us a PowerMate PM0435000
generator a few days ago we were very happy to get it prior to the June Hurricane season coming to Florida! After reading all the "Glowing Reports" about this particular model, we were even more so! However, after reading the manuals throughly and preping the generator per instructions I was ready to syart the "4-hour run in", but the bloody thing refused to obey its "easy-pull start" hype. Im no spring chicken, but not exactly feeble either but no amount of checking all settings again with the oil installed and gas tank fed, it steadfastly refused to start! A younger friend "hah a go" at the pull start, same result-NO START. I checked the fuel flow to carb and checked the plug, that all seemed in orde! Called the local Lowes (Where it was delivered from). They said it would be replaced! Empty das tank and waiting for a call. Not what I expected fron this " much praised and recommended" generator. Thought that somebody had to tell the truth of their experiences! Go ahead, if you like to gamble? Maybe you will be one of the many supposedly lucky ones? Caveat rnptor, as is said!

FACTORY CLOSE-OUT! Coleman Powermate is liquidating these generators to make room for their 2008 model.

EGD also offers another Coleman close-out at $599.99. If you're shopping soley on price, get that one.

If you want value, you should seriously consider this model. Why?

First, it comes with a 20-Amp Gen-Cord. The cord alone is worth the extra $100.00.

Secondly, it has pneumatic -- instead of plastic tires.

Third, it features a Briggs & Stratton -- instead of Tecumseh engine.

Basically, it's a higher quality generator along with a Gen-Cord. Good value!
