Craftsman 28858 Reviews & Ratings
Relaible, comfortable, time saver, 26 hp Craftsman 288582

Purchased on clearance for $1200.00 about 5 yrs. ago. Sweet deal, I added a blade ($250) to plow snow with, works great. I literally plow in snowbanks and no front end problems at all. I purchased a 3 yr extended wart.for $309 and it covered all I needed. A new carb,(ethanol issue) one deck pulley, tire and battery during those 3 yrs. and I got back 25% back in a check for blades, plugs, air and oil filter which dropped the ext. wart to about $85 per year. All covered by Sears. no questions asked. Paid nothing extra, fixed immediately with parts from service truck or ordered and done in one week. Didn't think I would like the foot pedal hydro static pedal, but it is awesome when plowing cause I can use both hands to steer in turns. Wish they still made this 26 hp workhorse. Cuts tall weeds well too. I change oil as it should be and fresh gas only.

Pros:
Durable, Easy To Use, Price, Exceeded Expectations
Low quality riding mower at midrange price

We bought our craftsman riding mower 26 hp with 52" deck I believe about 2 years ago. So far what we have found is a few things. The brigs & straton engine is powerful and nearly unstoppable. Oil changes are easy and same with filters and spark plugs.

Cons: the seat on ours is NOT adjustable so if you don't fit on it (my tiny wife) you never will fit on it ever. The deck was poorly built and I already had a weld on it break (luckily I have a welder handy so got it repaired free). The tires are super slick and are very easy to get stuck in tall grass. Any fist sized or larger rocks can destroy the mower (as I bought ours for an acreage and we have spent a fortune repairing the deck after we find new undiscovered rocks each summer).

Parts are expensive for this mower and I'd say cheaply made so they break easy. The wheels on the front are loose making steering difficult quite often and upon closer inspection it is the design that makes them cheap and very low quality to make steering difficult (no bearings in our wheels it is like a kids toy care.... a metal bar running through the rim to hold it on with washers to hold it tight and a pin to lock it in place).

Overall I would rate our mower a 2.5 out of 10. The engine is what gives it all its stars from me. Well built sold engine easy to maintain. The rest of the mower low quality. And that isnt mentioNing the plastic trim that fell off and can't be reattached.

Bought in spring of 2011 and have been using it to cut 4 acres since then, belt will come off if you try to cut to high grass , other than that it has been very reliable and gives a great cut for a mower with 3 blades. I would buy this again but I believe they changed manufacturers and the quality has gone down.

Turn Tight Means Bent Axles.

I am now on my 3rd front axle, 2nd set of front wheels, 4th set of wheel bearings, 2nd set of spindles, 5th C clamp. It only takes a tight turn at moderate speed to bend the axle. If you do not change it out immediately, the misalignment will damage the wheel bearings. When they crack the wheel comes off and in the process bends up the wheel hub. The mistake is thinking that the misalignment of the front end really isn't that bad and you can mow just one more time. Overall, Sears turn tight mowers are horribly under designed. Its basically a standard axle carrying about 3 times the normal stress. Horrible, simply horrible.

Do NOT purchase!

I purchased my tractor in 2012. I purchased the Maintenance agreement a few months later because I had so many problems! Belt comes off (at least once every time it is used), engine dies when it gets hot and will not restart (4 service visits the first year, 2 the next and 2 so far this year and it is only May!), battery replaced 2 times so far. Today it died after getting hot and the electrical system is dead.

You CANNOT afford their trash!!
