Craftsman 88170 Reviews & Ratings
Craftman losing its reputation

This is the second Craftsman snow blower I have purchased, shame on me. Following the first year I had to take it in because it would not start after I changed the oil and got it ready for the season in September. Carburetor problem. This season new problem getting it started however was able to address problem on my own. Since then I have been using it this season which is very bad and I have a very wide and long driveway, the self propelled feature just decided to stop. The powdery snow it works fine anything heavier and you are constantly stopping to clear the shoot. No more shame on me the last Craftsman product I will buy. So unfortunate that the once dependable Sears products are built so poor now.
Sears will go the way of Montgomery Wards very soon.

I have had this blower for over 10 years and it does its job within its limited capabilities. It always starts, gets a good run on a tank of gas, and it throws snow well enough (if you work it within its power/design range).
It's save my back more than a few "Icy-Hot" patches. Consider the weight of the snow instead of the depth you'll understand it's capabilities better. Really wet (heavy) snow needs to be removed at the 2" or 3" stage of a storm. This means you're out there a few times during the storm (in wet snow). To me, that’s better than trying to shovel 10"-12" of it when the storm stops.
The Snowplow "concentrate" at the end of the driveway that is 10"- 12" deep is best attacked by slicing 10" at a time (not 22" width). The Blower doesn't have the power to churn and throw a full 22" across cut of compacted or wet snow. However, I have successfully removed 20+ inch deep drifts fully across the 22" cut as long as it's fresh snow that's still frozen and not too wet to begin with. It doesn't have to be "pure powder" but it does need to be frozen (fresh).
The biggest "cons" I have for this machine is that because it's on the low end for power, you have to make smaller width cuts in snow, and therefore you end up backing up A LOT... and there is no reverse! I end up pulling the full 150+Lbs backwards A LOT. Also to redirect the chute you must lean over the machine to slap the chute in the right directions. (More unpleasant bending!!!!)
Personally I think this blower is reliable and does what it's designed to do but if I had to do it over again I'd find another $250 in my budget for 3 things...
(1.) buy a machine with Reverse!!!!
(2.) a few more CC's (HP's) in the motor, and
(3). have a chute that can be re-directed from the controls on the machine.

I got this snow blower a few years ago as a gift, if I had paid for it, it would have been returned after first use. Unless it is perfect powder the unit has a hard time dealing with it. If it is heavy or wet snow you might as well use a shovel, it clogs all the time. Spend more money and get better quality.

Pnuematic tires go flat easily, clogs often generally, a POS. Spend $100 more for a better one.
