Not a Turf mower
By Mark R.

Review Posted 08/03/2013
I purchased this mower after reading several reviews which were pretty good but after purchasing I realized this was not the mower for my purpose which is mowing turf type Bermuda grass with edged beds. The blade adjustment changes the rear only and the front of the housing stays the same, so the front drags through the grass and will push leaves to the side. The housing is the same width as the wheels so when mowing close to the edged bed the wheels will fall into the lower bed and the mower scalps the grass on that pass. The last thing is the grass catcher which will only fill to 1/3 to 1/2 before the mower starts leaving a trail of clippings so a constant issue with dumping the bag. Very poor design.

Great Swivel Mower For The $$$
By David

This is a great swivel mower for an entry level price. Overall, the mower performs extremely well even in thick St Augustine grass. I run the mulcher and do not see any surface "hay" the next day, which tells me it mulches fine enough to soak back to the thatch layer quickly. The mower starts easily on the first pull every time.
The main con of this mower and this is any swivel front mower's achilles heel, is the ability to "headin" close to a fixed point. The offset of the front wheels prevents this. The other con for me is the difficulty in collapsing the handle, I store my mower under a bench which requires me to collapse the handle to the shipping position. Doing this requires kicking both sides of the lower handle out while pulling the handle forward, this is a bit cumbersome until you learn how to position yourself.
Overall, this mower is a quality mower at a fair price and I will recommend the mower to my friends.

The casters just make sense. You have no idea how much effort the casters will save you until you have tried them on a lawn with obstacles and the variable self propelled feature is great. I can cut my lawn without feeling drained and faster too. Thanks Mowers Direct for making this model available.

I am well satisfied with the mower with the one exception. The speed control lever is too weak. Hard to control speed.

Delivered on Time and is Working Well

The delivery driver was very nice. He unloaded the mower and helped me get the rather heavy box into the garage. There was no damage to the mower.
It was easy to assemble and starts on the first pull of the cord.

Mower is hard to start. Runs well, and is more maneuverable than our Craftsman. The Craftsman is easy to start after 7 years of use.

Love It, but it's not perfect

I don't know why all walk-behind mowers don't have casters for front wheels. It is brilliant! It requires SO much less effort to maneuver the mower around trees and any non-straight line... no need for the constant push-down-to-change-direction that ALL fixed-wheel mowers require. And on this one, fixing the front wheels is a snap when you want to mow along a slope.
This Cub Cadet starts super-easily, runs very quietly, and I much prefer the rear-wheel drive to front. Tip - Front-wheel drive is just lame. I see almost no advantage whatsoever. I bought a Husquvarna from Lowe's and returned it after three weeks just because it stunk... then ponied up an extra $100 for this Cub Cadet.
The bagging system works very well. 200% better than the Husky. I recommend not putting the starter pull cord in the hook on the handlebar. Letting it retract into the motor housing gets it out of the way of the bag. One thing - adjusting the height is not as quick as most mowers because while there is one lever for both rear wheels, on the front you do have to move the axles. It's easy but not instant. Speaking of which - I think that in the odd-numbered height positions, the front wheels don't quite trail enough to spin as easily...but most people would not notice this. Also I recommend using silicone spray on the plastic chute parts.
Overall I'd give this machine an A-, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone with a lawn that is not 100% rectangular. It practically eliminates the need for a string trimmer.

Great mower
By Jeff

Had a Honda and changed to this. Had a tried and true Honda engine. Starts on the first or second pull. We have Zoysia and it mows it great and does not bog down. We mulch our clippings, it cuts it so fine you do not see any clippings left on the grass. I would highly recommend this mower at this point in time.

This is the second one of the same model I have purchased. First one lasted ten years and still going with new owner. The new one feels lighter and smoother. Seems to be well built and starts easily.

New cub cadet mower

This is a great mower. I really like the swivel front wheels. I have Zoyzia grass and I cut my back yard on the # 2 setting for the first cut of the season and I mulched it and there wasn't clumps, it just cut it so fine I was very impressed. I am now cutting on # 3 which makes my lawn look great. I am one happy guy with my new mower.
