Terrible Customer Service From Manufacturer
By Scott A.
Wisconsin

Review Posted 06/13/2023
I am forced to purchase a new rough cut mower due to terrible experiences with "customer service". I have owned this mower for 5 years with many fixes required. The only support from Dirty Hands was my initial setup with a faulty motor. I have never received a response to my calls or emails on several occasions since. I cannot operate this machine due to a broken wheel support and replacement parts cannot be found. I don't like providing negative reviews since this machine has been beat on, but NO customer service is unacceptable and this product should never be purchased if it becomes available again.

Well Built

The mower itself does what it's supposed to do but the height adjustment set up is a joke. You have to pull the pin while you are standing on the adjustment paddle and raise / lower with your weight. Well the unit weighs 600#s and I weigh 185#. It's next to impossible to change cutting height w/out help and its not much easier w/ two people. If I weighed any less I'd just have to set it in the middle range and leave it there. It's really really bad...

Customer Service Is Very Bad

This bush hog was purchased end of April. It is already broken. Worked great while it ran. Have called and emailed about problem and they will not answer multiple emails and have been put on hold every single time and will hold for at least thirty minutes each time without ever speaking to one single person. It seems to be built well, motor is strong and cuts fairly well. Was disappointed in the width that it cuts, doesn’t cut close to the width of the exterior cover. But customer service is the worst I have ever dealt with... honestly haven’t dealt with them cause they won’t respond.

Made In The USA But Needs A Few Tweeks

Nice equipment and delivered quickly. There are only three things I was disappointed in. The manual is vague, especially at the ensemble instructions. The height adjustment is very difficult to move, especially for people weighing less than 180 pounds. The YouTube indicated height adjustment to be easy: It’s impossible for me as I weigh 120 pounds. Customer service is not that great. It was like, “Hey, you bought our equipment and we really don’t care anymore.”

Fix my three complaints and you’ll have a great mower!

So Far So Ok

Shipping was fast. After unpacking I found that the left rear corner was bent a little but was easy enough to get straighten out.
Assembly was rather straight forward although the directions were not a lot of help. After reading some of the other reviews, I decided to take it apart and check the belt. The belt sits right at the top of the idler pulley so I added a spacer under the pulley to center the belt in the groove.

The blade bolts were over tightened and had to be loosened to allow for the swing action. As others have mentioned, the engine was shipped with oil in it. First day of use went well with no problems. Cut 3 to 4 foot high grass with out a problem. Second day I got a flat tire 30 minutes into mowing. On a rough cut mower you would think they would use 4 ply tires instead of 2 ply. Tires will probably by changed out before next spring.

I Like It Much Better Than My PTO Mower
By Randy O.
Evansville, Indiana
Purchased 05/28/2019 |
Review Posted 06/21/2019
I was unaware of this product until I started looking for a new a PTO driven finishing mower for my tractor. The pull behind would have cost $1500- $2000. I got the 20 HP Dirty Hands rough cut for $2000. The 10.5 HP might have been adequate but I have 5 acres, with hills and areas that grow tall before I can get to them because of the rain. So I decided to go bigger. The 14 HP was only $200 less than the 20 HP so I went with the 20 HP. I also went rough cut instead of finishing because of that.

The electric start works well, starts easily. I pull it with my 4 wheeler. It is 600 # but balanced well enough that I can manually push or pull it on flat ground. Attaches easily to the ball hitch. It cuts thru 3 ft tall orchard grass with ease. It never bogged down. This was going faster than I would have on my tractor pulling a PTO finishing mower. Much more comfortable ride than on top of my 25 HP tractor. Turns easier and sharper than the tractor. It is 42 inch cut instead of the 60 inch finishing mower I had but still cuts faster since it tows faster. I really like it!!

Downsides:

Took 2 hours to assemble. Instructions are vague. Changing cutting height looks like it should be easy but it isn’t. I had to jack it up to take the weight off to do it. First time I used it one wheel came off. I found another bolt and reattached it but now one wheel is at a slight angle. Time will tell on this, I guess.

Overall, I have no regrets. Compared to my PTO tractor pulled mower it cuts faster, rides easier, turns easier, backs up easier.
And it only takes a few minutes to hook it up to the 4 wheeler. Hooking up the PTO driven mower to my tractor is a major hassle.

Good Machine But Check The Belt
By Lois M.
Norwood, Missouri
Purchased 03/29/2019 |
Review Posted 06/04/2019
First let me state that this machine while very good on brush is not a tractor mount brush hog. If that is what your going to use it for you will be sorely disappointed . That being said the machine performs very well for what it was intended. I was exceptionally pleased with PED's shipping and delivery . The machine was well crated and all the parts were there. The instructions were easy to read and assembly was easy. As stated in some of the reviews the holes in the chain guard brackets do not all line up. A couple of minutes with a step drill fixed this problem.

Once assembled and fueled on oiled the machine started right up and I used it the clean the border of my hay field. It worked great and the swing hitch makes it nice for doing the edge of a field. I did try it on heavier brush and I believe eventually it would have done the job but as I stated above it is not a tractor mount brush hog. The 20 hp engine starts easy but it is prone to flooding in warm weather but this is not unusual , also there is some play in the throttle cable as it is very long, also minor.

Now to the reason for the lower rating. After about 16hrs use the machine stopped cutting and threw the belt off. There is a lot of unbolting to be done to get down to the belt but I have seen worse. When I got the belt housing open I found the tension pulley laying in the bottom of the belt case. It seems the bolt on which the pulley and springs set had pulled out of the tension arm. This caused the pulley to cut the belt in several places , so I went to Orielys to get another belt. When we measured the belt is was 53 inches. The instructions with the machine states it uses a gates m52. The gates m52 is a 55-inch belt.

Long story short , I bought the right belt, threaded the tension pulley bolt back on the arm and center punched the threads so it will not come back off, and cut the springs so the will now fit on the anchor bolt. I think all this hassle could have been avoided if the machine had arrived with the correct belt on it. The cost to repair this screw up was about 39$ and two days work.

Rough Start Good Now

On initial run the blade engagement started howling like a banchee! DHT responded pretty well and sent replacement parts. This delayed use for several weeks. It’s now back in operation and I’m extremely happy with its use and performance is excellent. My main purpose is to rid our property of excessive brush to minimize the California fire dangers. This machine is cutting thru it like butter!

We are softened to hear that your initial experience with your Dirty Hand tools tow-behind has not been a pleasant one. Since we last spoke, we understood that you were in the process of taking the mower to a service center to determine if the unit is defective. If the service center deems the unit is, in fact, defective, we will have the unit picked up and replaced.

If you are still having trouble contacting the manufacturer, we would be more than happy to reach out on your behalf. We greatly value your business and hope to have another opportunity to serve you in the future, thank you.
