Amazing Generator
By Ben R.

Review Posted 09/13/2020
I purchased this XP8000E Generac generator back in 2017. I am so impressed with it. Great quality, power and dependability. I feel this is the best generator on the market. It has now been replaced by the Generac, XC8000E. I still love my XP8000E..I'm sure the replacement model is just as good... On a side note** Electric Generators Direct, gave me five star service!!

Very Good Generator, But Very Heavy!

Ok, This model was donated to the HS Marching Band for use to power the equipment trailer. (EGD was not the donor). You can tell this product was made for work and was well thought out right from the get go. It includes 2 qts oil and a complete kit for service (funnel, oil filter, air filter and spark plug). For those users mentioning that the gen didn't quite take a full 1.5qts oil at initial fill up, you have to gently use the recoil starter to pump oil through the unit prior to starting. This lubricates the cylinder wall AND fills up the pre-installed oil filter, then recheck oil level....and there is your missing amount of oil adding up to 1.5qts.

The battery that came with the unit was fully charged, but my only complaint was I found it difficult to attach the battery cables. I got the job done but wasn't particularly impressed with access to the battery terminals. That should not deter anyone from purchasing this model.

I love the control panel and the features. Putting the fuel petcock right on the face of the machine was brilliant and this generator probably has the best and most logical control panel of everything I've used and researched.

My second gripe about the unit is how heavy it is. Moving it up and down the ramp of the semi trailer requires 2 Dads or 1 burley teenager not worried about blowing out his back! That said, you can't get away from greater weight in this size of a unit. They will all weigh more than smaller output portables.

You cant hardly beat this unit for price/performance/features but you can certainly pay many thousands more for something comparable.

I like the tec support. They answered on a Saturday and got the missing generator cover ordered it took 5 days to arrive. I did the break in with space heater and a 5 hp electric air compressor. It came with two quarts of oil, spar spark plug, oil and air filters. It is easy to use an makes clean power ran right on 60Hz, I checked it loaded with my Fluke oscilloscope.

Whats Happened To Generac?
By Damon P.

Last year, I bought the XG1000E generator. One month later the starter and its relay went crazy. So this is what happens. It is upon YOU to find a authorized dealer and drop it off. It will take then a while to look at it. Then they will ask for parts. This will take one to 4 weeks. Then they will finish the repair.
They got it fixed 4 weeks later.

Since then I have a muffler that will not hold bolts into it. The muffler bracket is steel, but shattering and falling off to. Guess what, Generac doesn't have the bracket anywhere in their system in this country. So I keep it wired on and hope for the best. I have 400 hours on the gen now and dread taking it in for a muffler issue.. it would be gone for a very long time.

I thought maybe I should buy their highest quality gen this time. So I just bought the XP8000E. This is a much nicer looking GEN.

However, it ran a total of .7 hours and hasn't run since. You know what this means now? Its a one month death sentence.I'm renting a generator now to replace this... The gen has been in the shop for two weeks now.. apparently its a relay and flywheel issue. They have been waiting days for approval. Then we will wait for a week of more to get parts.
Again, this will be a 4-6 week disaster. I will pay as much in additional rent for a replacement than if I had just bought a HONDA.

Additionally, every Generac dealer I go to says the same thing. It takes forever to get parts, and the warranty approval can take up to a week to hear back from Generac.

I thought I had a fluke of issues with the first one but its no fluke. Generac has gone down hill. My oldest Generac is 15 years old and running strong. They don't make them like this anymore!

I simply can't buy Generac any more. Nobody will work on them because the diagnostic tools are not common and parts are scarce...

I must get on to another brand... I would encourage you to do the same.

Except the battery for electric start is junk. I took the panel off and built a angle iron bracket to put a garden tractor battery in it. Just extended the cables. That's the only downfall I have had.

GFIC To Sensitive

Would not purchase this generator again. I purchased it mainly for the clean AC signal. However because of the distance between the transfer switch and the generator, I get nuesince trips. Had to move the generator closer to the house. Now it's in a non sheltered area. Also, a better charger should be supplied, not one that can over charge the battery.

Expert Response
John,
I'd suggest contacting an electrician. You're using the correct switch for the generator and the distance really shouldn't be an issue for your application.

The most likely reason you're getting trips is because there is a bad GFCI (outlet) or loose wire on one of the circuits you're trying to power. A GFCI outlet has a lifespan of roughly 10-years. If it's an outlet that's used often, it could be much shorter than that.

Generac SP8000E - very happy
By George S.
Reno, Nevada
Purchased 01/17/2015 |
Review Posted 02/16/2015
I bought this generator to replace, or supplement, my 12 year old Generac 4000EXL which has powered us thru numerous power outages. The 4000EXL enables us to live comfortably by carefully managing our power usage however, it can not power my 3 hp well pump.

The XP8000E arrived in a very timely fashion and I had no trouble getting it going. I plugged it into my external house power plug and switched my transfer switch and it worked beautifully, including running the well pump. A week after it arrived we had a power outage and the gen powered us for the 6 hour outage with no problems.

A couple of things I learned along the way:

It is pretty easy to assemble the axle/wheels and rear supports without a helper by carefully sliding the unit to slightly overhang the shipping pallet. Do the axle/wheels first, then the rear supports.

The oil filler hole is pretty difficult to reach, but a short piece of 1/2" plastic garden irrigation tubing fits into the filler hole nicely and then just insert a normal funnel into the other end of the irrigation tubing. Fill carefully the gen didn't quite hold the 1.5 qt in their specification before overflowing.

I selected the XP instead of the XG mostly because of the THD spec. While my old 4000EXL has powered all our computers and associated equipment, heater controllers, TV, etc without any problems, I didn't want to cut corners on power quality from the new generator.

The new generator is only somewhat noisier than my 4000EXL.

Last but certainly not least, the folks at EGD were very responsive to questions I had before and after placing the order.

My only complaint so far is that Generac doesn't offer a version of this generator without the GFIC feature for home use where OSHA is not an issue

Strong and Reliable
By Peter

Review Posted 01/23/2015
I bought this generator and took it camping with me for a week this past June. I ran the generator all day and late into the evening with success great for keeping the air conditioning on in the camper.

And at home, the generator doesn't flinch when powering my appliances and sump pump during power outages. It's very easy to pull start. Usually, by the second or third pull, it's running. The only downside to this generator is the noise. It's really loud.

But overall, it's a sturdy little thing that provides unlimited power for my needs. I'm satisfied with it.

Generac XP8000e
By Nevin
Pennsylvania
Review Posted 06/27/2014
I purchased my Generac XP8000e in the first part of May. The reasons I chose the Generac XP model was because it’s THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) value is listed 5%. Over the years I noted that THD’s are a significant benchmark as to the quality of the electrical source and should be =5%. It also has a pressurized lubricant system on the engine, and oil filter. It has an AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) on the generator. I’ve tried it twice. The voltage is consistent at 118 v and the frequency at 61 Hz. If you don’t have a meter, check out frequency look at TRC Model AECM20020. It is about $60.00 and worthy it.

My APC battery backup did indicate some sensitivity issues. I noted that it was more likely to occurred when the load was VERY light. If I turned on some lights on the same generator side so that the load was over ½ KW there were few sensitivity issues. I would think that is a normal response for electronics. I was able to print on my Laser Printer and make a copy on my fax machine two pieces of equipment that I understanding are more sensitive to a poorer electrical source than even a computer. The 8000 model does NOT have a dip-stick to check the oil. It is challenging to do correctly.

ALSO, the Generac XP models are total GFCI units. I can NOT run my submersible well pump. It trips the GFCI breaker immediately. One source indicated they have never seen a GFCI breaker on a submersible well pump. My sump pump worked OK. Want to contact Generac about the well issue and the bonded neutral on a GFCI unit. Do your research about GFCI's and bonded neutrals first. The catch 22 is I haven’t found this quality of a unit in a non-GFCI.

Purchased several years ago, Chinese battery died in 6 mo. Could not replace from local battery stores due to custom size and shape battery made for Generac. Can not rebuild or clean leaking carb it must be replaced, disposable ! Made in china. No fuel line filter. When it runs well it does hold 120 and 220 volts steady with a load.
