Great Product

I have not written a review before, but this is great. It arrived on time and started right up. I had the electrician install the transfer switch and I was able to run my fridge, freezer, tv, toaster, kitchen, dining room lights, bathroom lights, bedroom lights, and a hall light and bedroom light upstairs, as well as the sump pump and furnace.
I was only running half load, too. Obviously, not everything going at the same time. I was really impressed. I can run a microwave, but I have to unplug it and put it in an outlet since it's on the same circuit as the range. I really wanted to run a few outlets too so the wife can have coffee. I was out of power for a week, and I'm sure now that I bought it, we'll never have another storm again, But, it's piece of mind.

Buying & using the generator during Hurricane Sandy
By Robert Morrison
Bloomingdale, New Jersey
Review Posted 11/05/2012
My family and I just went through Hurricane Sandy. However I was in Boston on the night it hit NJ and my family was home in NJ without me. Sandy hit Monday night 10/30/2012. My family lost power around the early evening with all kinds of large trees being uprooted going down on wires, cars and houses in our community.
On Tuesday morning I was still working at the exhibition at the Boston Convention Center. I called local and much more distant big box stores looking for a generator. Providentially the only one that had one was the closest and the reason that they had one was because it had been returned already. I drove over and providentially found that they had 3 of them in different locations within the store which had been returned. I purchased all 3 since two of my neighbors had asked my wife that if I found any extras would I also buy them one as well. I drove home with them in the back of my Toyota Sienna minivan- all 600 lbs of them along with all the other equipment from the exhibition.
We set them up Wednesday afternoon. They came with the oil and a funnel with a tube for adding the oil to the engine which is quite convenient and helpful. The wheel kit and fold down handles are very easy to install using two metric sockets. It has worked well. They all started on the first pull every time. I powered my Gould jet pump for my 100 ft well and my boiler which heated my hot water heat along with 2 refrigerators and a freezer and the gas stove for working the oven since it has an igniter and needs electricity also for the thermostat for the oven. My wife was making cookies in the oven. Of course we ran lights and our router and DSL modem along with charging laptop computers and cell phones etc. It seemed to run the full time as estimated on a tank of gas. We would run it and then shut it off at times to save gas since gas has been so hard to get during this disaster in northern NJ.
I changed the oil at the 30 hr recommendation in the manual and it was very easy to do. You want to use 30 weight oil unless the temp stays below 40 deg F continuously. Then you use 10W30. It was tough finding 30W because everyone had bought it up all around. You need to change it after every 100 hours or every season which ever comes first. The engine is made by Generac which is a name brand in generators. It comes with a 3 year non-commercial warranty. So I am trusting that it will continue to perform well at least over the next 3 years. I like Honda engines but it is 3 times as much to buy the same size generator from Honda.
My neighbors have had similar experiences with the other 2 units I bought for them and are still using it since they are still without electricity. They have told me that it has run well for them, too. They both have wired it directly into their electrical panel so that they do not have to run extension cords which is what I did.
I wanted to buy a generator before but had not got around to it. I don't like having to buy something before I research it and get what I really think is the best overall. However beggars cannot be choosers especially when there were none to be found and I needed something. I ran it 3 and 1/2 days. Since then I shut off the gas and ran the engine out of gas to clear it from the carburetor. I also emptied the gas out of the tank in order to store it until I use it for the erection of my 10x20 shed or the next crisis; whichever comes first.
I have also ordered a transfer box to hook it into my main panel so that I do not have to run extension cords during the next outage. I see that as the best way to do it.
Right now I would give a good recommendation for this generator, but of course that is not based upon using 10 different models or using it over several years. It is only based upon this one model and our 3.5 day experience with it which has been good. That is why I gave it 4 stars.
I have now bought the cord and transfer box from Electric Generators Direct. The cord has already shipped and the box will probably not ship until the end of November. I can't wait to install that and test it out.

Exactly what we needed

This unit was a life saver. We live in the North East, and it was delivered just before Hurricane Sandy arrived. I had the transfer switch installed on Saturday. The unit assembles easily, and I liked that oil and a funnel are provided. It started on the 2nd pull.
The generator ended up powering the well pump, 2 sump pumps, fridge, furnace, and some lights for 36 hours. It is sturdy, well built and runs like a top. It's easy to move in and out of our shed.
I am very happy to have this genny, and would highly recommend it

Just purchased it and assembled it very quickly and efficiently. Started on second pull and ran smoothly on the gallon of gas. It's rather compact,so it fitted nicely into my storage closet in the garage. Hope I don't have to use it this fall, but am confident it will do the job.

Overall, Great Experience

Based on my electrical needs, this Honeywell unit seemed to be the right fit.
There was a slight hick-up with the delivery and it did not arrive when scheduled. But the freight company seemed polite and professional, and fortunately I did not need it by a specific date. So all is well.
During un-packaging and assembly, it was very apparent that this is a quality unit and should last a lifetime for my modest needs. Assembly was a breeze. I was pleased to see that I will be able to store it indoors because it will fit through a regular doorway even when fully assembled.
After installation of a transfer switch, it was finally time to fire it up and see if it would fulfill my electrical needs. It started nearly immediately and ran smoothly within a few seconds. To my relief, it seems as though this unit will not break much of a sweat when providing power to about 80% of my house. I am currently powering six circuits including interior/exterior lighting, electrical sockets, oil furnace, fridge, and small kitchen appliances.
This appears to be a great product.....sold by a great vendor.

So Far So Good

The handle and wheels were easy to assemble and after putting in the oil (was supplied) and gas it started right up! Now I just stare at it waiting for the next power outage. I was powerless for 9 days in October after the snowstorm walloped CT and won't be in that situation again!

My Review

The generator arrived in a timely manner, and without physical damage. It started right up and ran perfect except it did not generate any electric output. I took the advice of one of Honeywell's dealers and tried to excite it, using a corded drill and spinning the chuck in reverse. It did not work. I am taking it to the dealer, and he told me it would be a month before he can look at it. Not a good beginning. I am certain, if the the machine performed as it should, I would apply a Good rating to this review but since not, the bad rating.

We had no power for over 7 Days. We ran the entire house, Furnace, Chest freezer, Fridge, Lights TVs, This thing never even hesitated. My wife even ran the Oven. The voltage in the house was spot on, Even under heavy load it maintained the proper voltage. Its was very easy to start, Even my wife had no trouble at all. The generator was not too loud and great on gas. I cant recommend this generator enough.
