I'm thrilled with the performance of the air compressor. Top quality American product. I use it in my shop daily for painting and pneumatic tools and its recovery time is quick and fairly quiet for a large unit. Very pleased.

Great Shop Compressor

Review Posted 07/19/2022
This was a replacement of a big box compressor I had for 15 years. It would never run tools. It was basically a good system to inflate tires, blow off dirt, and use a air stapler. I purchased this to have a real compressor without spending an insane amount of money. I wanted something that could run any tool, and do anything I wanted that requires compressed air. It has lived up to that expectation. It also does it quietly. I’m very pleased so far. We’ll see how it holds up long term.

Top Notch Compressor / Customer Service / Warranty
By Eric M.

This has been a great compressor for my small shop - I have never had a problem with capacity from small die grinders and hand sanders all the way up to big paint sprayers, plasma cutters etc. I only run 1-2 tools at a time and it keeps up nicely.
Not super loud - it is in the corner of my shop, I hear it but it isn't a distraction.
After a year of light use, mine developed a problem with the motor...AC Direct put me in touch with Puma and they replaced the motor, no questions asked. So post purchase support is top notch!
I have no problem buying this brand again, and working with AC Direct.. (I have purchased other things from this family of companies including a big propane shop heater as well). Great!

Like that the cylinders are separate to keep air and compressor cooler. Water drain location is easy to reach and the tube from compressor to tank is not copper, it has a flexible hose.

This is not a 6.5hp motor. Motor manufacturer (WEG) states this is a 5hp motor.

Expert Response
I sincerely apologize for the situation you are experiencing with your Puma air compressor. I have reached out to Puma, who informed us that this air compressor does have a 5HP rated motor with a service factor of 1.3, which means that this unit can safely operate 30% higher than its rated horse power (up to 6.5HP). This is standard procedure that many air compressor manufacturers follow on how they rate and list their horse powers. If the motor’s horse power is an issue, a bigger compressor may be needed for your application. The horse power should not make a difference if the air compressor is producing the cfm required to operate your tools. If you have any other questions or concerns we are happy to assist you. Please accept our apologies for your disappointment and inconvenience.

Good Compressor, Needs Upgrades
By Robert P.

Review Posted 09/01/2018
I would be reluctant to recommend this compressor. The performance is good for the cost. The motor burned up after 3 years of moderate use. I ordered a new motor, which shut my operation down for a week until Puma got around to shipping a replacement. The actual shipping took 2 days. When I received the replacement motor, I found that they shipped a 5hp instead of the 6.5hp. The box listed the correct motor, but it contained the wrong one. The staff was friendly, however, the service was slow. I believe that priority should be placed on replacement parts for established customers that are already dependent upon their compressors.

Needs Magnetic Starter

I have had my PUMA 6 1/2 HP 60-gallon compressor for about 6 months. Arrived with minor shipping damage (cosmetic), but not enough to bother filing a claim. When I went to wire it up, noticed the pressure switch was rated for only 2 HP, which means its extremely overloaded and will be failure prone. Bad engineering. Went to Puma site and found they offered a magnetic starter option (not shown on ACD site). Was unsuccessful in contacting Puma to order one, so I bought a magnetic starter off the internet for $60. Wired it up, everything runs OK, no problems.
My media blaster requires 15 cfm @ 80 psi the compressor is rated at 19.5 cfm @ 90 psi, so should be OK. But the compressor just barely keeps up, so either the blaster requirements are understated, or the compressor is overrated, or both.
Wish now I had spent the extra $$$ and bought a 7.5 hp. That said, the Puma is a good unit for the money, just needs the mag starter (IMO).

This Compressor Os Junk, Weg Motors Are JUNK
By Carl J.

Review Posted 06/12/2018
I have owned this compressor for about 3 years. The wheel on the compressor came loose in about 2 months thank goodness for the cage. After about 3 years the starter capacitor failed for the 2nd time. I put in in the shop in March of 2018 and picked it April 12, 2018. Today 2 months later the starting capacitor has gone out again. It cost nearly 200 dollars for the repair in April. I was told Weg motors are junk. 1100 dollar compressor lasted me 3 years...I won't spend 2 hundred more dollars to repair a POS compressor.
