This transfer switch has all of the same features as our better choice, but it can handle a larger generator. The Reliance Q Series features 1-inch interchangeable circuit breakers. A 30A double-pole circuit breaker and a 20A double-pole circuit breaker, to handle heavier loads on the generator side, are included on each model.
The balance of the circuit breakers are single-pole 15A. In the transfer switch, these may be connected to 15A or 20A circuits in the load center. Circuits are limited to 15A only on the generator side of the switch. One of the largest benefits we see is that the circuit breakers in the transfer switch are easily replaced. The spaces containing the 30A and 20A double-pole circuits may be replaced with 15 or 20A single-pole breakers if desired.
If you have a portable generator less than 12500 watts, this transfer switch can be an easy way to avoid running cords all around your house. Plan ahead and have this transfer switch installed to save even more headaches during a power outage!

So Far, So Good

I have installed the transfer switches. The units lend to easy and simple installation. I was concerned about the use of size 10 awg red and black wires to feed power from the generator through the 50 AMP unit but a technician with the company assured me the wires would do their job. About everything needed for installation is supplied. The wires going into the house circuit box could be a little longer in order to reach the top breakers when using a bottom knockout, but with a little manipulation, they worked.
I have not yet tested the units with the generator, but foresee no problems.
I like the simplicity the transfer switches offer for risk-free use of the generator as it will be virtually impossible to produce feedback on the main power source of the house.

Filled The Need Well
By Bob

Review Posted 09/08/2024

The 10 breaker manual transfer switch worked out well to meet my needs. My main breaker panel did not have a master breaker, so I would either need to install a master breaker and interlock which would require complete power shutdown or a transfer switch. So I opted for the transfer switch.
I completed the install and all worked but there were some design issues worth mention:
The box was received slightly bent in the top corner. I was able to bent it back so the plastic cover fit properly.
My panel is set into the wall, so I set the transfer switch into the wall. I had to drill the side holes a little larger to screw the box into the studs. Also had to pop the 10 breakers out to get to the middle set of holes. The top holes were not used as it would require me to leave the two top screws holding the inner guts to the enclosure.
The 1" flex conduit was barely large enough for the 22 wires making it difficult to fish the wires through it. A 1-1/4" conduit would have been better. Also, the 1" BX connector was pre-installed into the center knockout. I would have preferred to use the right hand knockout to allow a longer length of conduit which would have made the install easier. My conduit length was only 4 inches as I went into the side of the main breaker panel.
The good news is coming into the bottom side of the main breaker panel gave me maximum wire length. Turns out I needed almost all the length for a couple of the connections. Would have been nice to have another foot or two of wire.

Not Good With AFCI Breakers

This product is not good if you have any AFCI breakers, due to the single neutral wire. Your breakers will trip immediately.

Fantastic Transfer Switch

I just went through a horrible ice storm experience. My power was out for 8 days. Never again. I looked online for the best transfer switch and also talked with electrician and they said this is the best and what they would have sold us. Will never go through this again. I need to stay warm and safe.

No Problems and Safest Solution

Installed this for my daughter and son in law because the e-box didn’t support an interlock and so they didn’t use a dangerous suicide cord alternative. The online videos provide easy to understand instructions for every step. Installed in a few hours with the only trouble areas being the heavy 1 gauge wire used from the inlet box, which was stiff and a very tight fit in the inlet box. The only minor complaint with the transfer switch was that only one straight connector along with two elbows was supplied and I really needed two straight connectors due to my location. Power failed next day due to winter storm and it worked perfectly. Super easy switch over to generator power without the danger.

Model: A510C Quite Adequate But Not Perfect

I have a fairly new house with finished garage. The load center is in the garage with the input outside the garage behind the wall where the transfer switch is located. The generator will be on a concrete pad at the input when I get to it next spring.
I am not a licensed electrician but I have over 40 years experience. The directions were pretty easy to follow. My 10 backup circuits are wired and operate correctly through the line part of the switch but the generator side has not been connected and tested yet. The following items could be improved, then I would have rated the A510C a solid 5.
- As I said, my garage is insulated and finished with sheetrock. I cut out a piece of sheetrock between the studs adjacent to the left side of the load center panel then ran the 1 inch conduit through the stud into the lower left side of the load center. Those 22 wires fit just too snug in the conduit to make it real simple. The conduit could have been a 1.5 inch piece rather than 1 inch.
- The face of the A510C could have been made with a flush mount cover like the interior load centers have to make it look nice. I cut a new piece of sheetrock placed around the edges of the transfer switch then put joint compound in the cracks around the switch. Still need to get some matching paint.
- The switch box does not have normal knock-out plugs, you are supposed to use a knock-out tool. Since I do not have one I just cut an 1 1/4 hole through the lower back of the switch and outside wall.
- The red and black 10 gauge wires for the input were just barely long enough to reach the connections on the input plug which is directly behind the switch. Had they not been long enough I would have replaced them with 6 ga wire rather than extend the 10 ga wire.
- The circuit letters on each red and black output wires are difficult for me to see and read. I had to use a magnifying glass.
In conclusion this will be a nice addition to the house when we get ready to downsize and sell. I have a new 12 KW generator.

Works As Designed

It's a good unit and easy to install, with very clear and concise instructions. The unit does transfer power very smoothly. There are a couple of things that could be improved on this unit: 6 AWG wiring on the main feed input lines instead of the 10 AWG that are installed in the unit would make me feel safer., I would like the wires that feed into the main breaker panel to be 5 feet instead of 4. It would be nice if the 1inch conduit was 1.5 inches. I would have been much happier if the price of this unit was around $300.
