1730E Simplicity Plastic Transmission
By Gary G.

Review Posted 12/31/2022
The plastic transmission is junk. I have had to replace the transmission at a cost of $500. Just for the parts without labor. Do your wallet justice purchase an Ariens.

I have the H1730e model for 3 years now, and live in the Hudson Valley New York. My driveway is gravel with pot holes and 1300 feet long! That’s right 1300 feet long. My neighbor helps plowing 700 feet sometimes, but I always clear 400 feet back and forth 5 times, including last year’s 24 inches of heavy wet snow. I walk at least 1 mile at times, I’m 63 years old, this machine has already blown more snow in hard conditions than most people will blow in their life time. I did have to go slow in 1 speed for my first pass, I just let the machine move at its own pace, yes, the motor rpm did drop when going thru that deep snow but it still threw that snow out far. I’ve blown many 8 and 10 inches’ storms as well. The only thing I did not like was the plastic skid shoes, stone wears them fast should be made of metal. I had a problem with the electric shoot getting stuck all the way to the left when 500 feet from my house, however the gear that drives the shoot can easily be removed and you can easily position your shoot in any place you want it then put the gear back in. When you get back to your house you will find out it’s the switch causing the problem. The switch comes apart just bend the contacts inside (save 30 bucks) put it back together and your good for a few more years. I’ve thrown many stones in the past years couple of shear pins, however this is a beast I’m glad I have it. Oh yes, it takes me a long time to clear the driveway and a 6 car parking area, and walkways. I use to have a 20 plus year troy built blower strong machine not like the troy built machines they make now.

I bought this blower for its reputation for quality and long lasting lifespan. It is a bit heavy but one must let the big engine power do the work... Unstoppable and very solid build.

I'M DISAPPOINTED

I own a simplicity h1730e purchased in 2014 (even though i didn't buy it from snowblowers direct) i wanted to let perspective buyers know what i have experienced with this snowblower. First of all my unit is 2 years old with approx. 12.5 hours of use. This snowblower does have a lot of nice features including the 420cc b/s engine, heated hand grips, side mounted light and all steel construction but here is what i have had to replaced in just 2 years:

1). Rotation switch and rotation motor: reason it would rotate to the the left but not to the right

2). Transmission: apparently faulty from the start, leaked oil on the bottom housing, kept jumping out of reverse, and would slow down to a crawl after extended use

3). Tires: in the second year hugh cracks in the rubber in between the lugs developed even though all these items were repaired under warranty i felt this was unacceptable for a snowblower of this quality. Hopefully i will have better luck from here on.

Expected More

I expected more for the money spent on a snowblower. I have owned and operated many snowblowers with much smaller engines and they all performed about like this one. I figured this one would be a monster but so far i am not impressed. Our first snow of the season was a heavy wet 6" snow and this machine could not throw the snow more than about 10 feet causing me to have to basically blow the snow twice. The engine did not seem to be the problem as it never sounded like it was working hard.

I feel that the impeller needs to be sped up. I am sure this 420cc engine could more than handle it. As far as the controls are concerned, they need to be redesigned. The steering handles are far too small and hard to reach when holding down on the drive and auger controls, the drive and auger controls are sprung so tight that my hands cramp up.

When selecting R2 it keeps popping out of gear and is very difficult to select. R1 seems ok. The electric start is nice, but not essential as this engine starts with one or two pulls, you will have more effort pulling out the extension cord for the electric starter than just pulling on the rewind.

Waiting for first snowfall. Received snowblower and with little work, got it put together. Very nice machine that appears that it will work very well. I'll know later when snow comes.
