Much Faster, Much Quieter, Same Price As My Last Trimmer
By Len L.
Corcoran, California
Purchased 03/03/2021 |
Review Posted 04/25/2021
This machine was able to mow down one acre of grass yesterday over about nine hours. It was a lot of walking in dusty conditions, but still, a pleasure considering the alternatives. Previously, I was using a Husqvarna 545FR, which was nice, but it would take me a much longer time. The Swisher feels like two to four times as fast as the Husqvarna, which I had to carry. I just walk behind the Swisher. I don't have to push it with any considerable force and don't feel compelled to wear a Tyvek suit, like I did with my Husqvarna because I am so far away from the trimmer head.

As a result, I am safer from heat-related illness and have lots more time to spend on other things. My lot is not completely flat, and there are plenty of gopher mounds. The Swisher did kick up some dust, but it did not stop running until it was out of fuel. It started on the first try, and I am sure it will start next weekend when I bring it out. The Honda engine can run on pump gasoline even though it has ethanol, and so, I could have used that instead of ordering a couple of five-gallon cans of high octane ethanol-free racing gasoline I estimated I would need, and which it ran very well on.

I have mowed around an acre and a half so far and have only used like three or four gallons. There was a lot less line needed than I estimated. Changing the oil after the first five-hour break-in period was easy. I would not have bought this machine if it was not self-propelled, and was worried it would not be able to work on my lot. Having tried it out, I will no longer dread the Spring time every year when I had to run the weed-eater all weekend for six weeks straight. Now, I can do it on two or three weekends easily.

Self Powered Trimmer

This is a nice unit, it's underpowered when I use two strings, but it breaks the strings often when I use four strings it stalls out when trying to cut. The self-powered drive is a great back saver.

Manufacturer Response
We are sorry that you are experiencing issues with your trimmer line.

This trimmer is equipped with 4 trimmer line attachment points. When mowing with trimmer, the 4 trimmer line configuration is recommended for a more consistent, even cut. When trimming tall or thick vegetation, the 2 trimmer line configuration is recommended for improved performance.

To properly install the line, loosely fold trimmer line in half. Insert line through the bottom holes of the cutting disc. Bring ends around and through the slot in the cutting disc flange. Pull ends to tighten loop. If we can assist you further, please contact us at 800.222.8183. Thank you for choosing Swisher!

Comes mostly assembled, just a few bolts for the handle, easy set up, starting is easy thanks to a Honda engine, trims good. Only complaint I have is it needs a cover for drive system to keep debris from packing in there.

Update To Original Review
By Laury B.

Review Posted 08/24/2018
This is an update to my original review. I was contacted by Swisher as well as the manufacturer about my problems. Replacement wheels and a belt maintenance kit were mailed to my home. When my husband removed the wheels he saw that a wheel bearing had popped out. He repacked the bearings but said he was not sure if they would stay packed because the wheels were plastic and they could not be packed too tightly or the plastic would probably break. However, he has been using it and it is working as it should. As long as the bearings do not pop out regularly we will be very pleased with the trimmer as it does work well on rough terrain and up the hills. Features are excellent, easy start even for me, handle controls for activating the trimmer head and activating the self-propelling. The jury is still out on value, if it works as long as an average lawn mower it is well worth the money.

Problematic
By Laury B.

Review Posted 08/02/2018
Really think the concept of this trimmer is great. I need it to trim under my electric pasture fencing that cannot be reached mowing. I am a petite woman and over the shoulder trimmers are heavy and hard to handle. I have tried a walk behind mower but the wheels are too small to handle the hills and rough terrain, any walk behind mower with bigger wheels is too tall to fit under the bottom electric strand. This trimmer is perfect EXCEPT the trimmer head fails to remain at the adjusted height, always falling down to the lowest level which scalps the grass, bogs down the engine, and stalls it. Poor design, there is no notch for the adjustment screw to catch on the head to hold it in place.

My husband was able to fix that problem and it worked perfectly around the house on level ground. BUT 1/4 into my first pasture the self-propel mechanism stopped working. My husband thinks it is the clutch as the chain continues to engage. I nearly had a heat stroke as I tried to wrestle this monster and finally gave up and abandoned it in the field when it ran out of gas.

I had asked Trimmers Direct about any fixes for the trim height and they referred me to manufacturer's help number. I have not called them yet to see if the clutch is covered or if repair parts are available. Since I ordered this online and return shipping is a pain, I am hopeful my husband can fix this expensive failure.

Do not order unless you are handy at fixing equipment!!!

Issues With Assembly Quality & Instructions
By Gregory B.
Longville, Minnesota
Purchased 06/18/2018 |
Review Posted 06/24/2018
I had the Swisher out for it's first run.

First I had to redo the handle assembly as it was not fastened to both bolts on the frame, this took 45 minutes and was not helped at all by the minimal instructions in the manual. Also, manual indicates thumb wheel to change belt tension... none found on mine.

The Honda motor tends to pulse at full throttle but works.

The machine seemed to work ok on my mix of short and tall grass.

I heard Swisher was top of the line.... we'll see.

Easy Assembly & Easy Start

Very nice product. The only issue is getting the string trim adjustment to stay. Unless you really really really "gronk" down on the screw, it seems to loosen. Once you tighten the heck out of it i.e. allen wrench and pliers for leverage' it seems to stay and works fine. When it gets time I'm going to drill some "indents" into the shaft so the screw will set.

A Nice Trimmer After A Few Adjustments
By Aaron R.
Clarksville, Ohio
Purchased 04/16/2018 |
Review Posted 04/27/2018
This trimmer is a real back saver and can go through a lot of grass pretty quickly. But when I received it and got it up and going, the engine couldn't even get the trimmer head up to speed and if I tried to trim grass with it, it would just stall every time. Also, it had a vibration through the handle and after two minutes my hands were numb and tingling. I gave it a try and removed two out of the four trimmer lines. Like most other trimmer mowers I’ve had, I adjust the belt tension and they go through anything I put it into and the vibration went away. It's one of those times where less is more.

Nice Machine But Not Made To Be Used By A Small Person

I'm 5'4" woman and it's impossible to use for any length of time. I have to wrap my wrist around the handle to engage it. Otherwise I would probably give it all "5's" but we got this for me to use and it's not easy! We haven't had it long enough to give it a true rating on it's merits.

Thank you for taking time to leave a review. We're sorry you are having issues keeping your trimmer engaged. We suggest adjusting the tension on the cable. It may be tightened to much. You can also adjust the handlebar height to make it more comfortable to operate. If neither of these suggestions work, please call us toll free at 1-800-222-8183. Thank you for choosing Swisher!
