MTD, not Toro
By Tom D.

The mower has done a good job with mowing, but have had several problems. First, the battery was dead out of the box, and wouldn't hold a charge longer than a week. Eventually replaced it when I got tired of jumping it off. Second, the steering sometimes "locks up" when you turn it hard in either direction and has to be pulled hard to get it back. The deck drive belt failed after only two seasons. Finally, one of the spindle pulley assemblies failed only half way into the third season. The failed top bearing went flying, fortunately no one was hurt. Local shop had the part ($80), and they confirmed my suspicion that the entire mower was actually made by MTD rather than Toro. (I knew the bagger attachment was MTD.) Seems this particular part fails quite often. The shop sells Toro, but will not sell the MTD models. I never would have purchased it had I known it was made by MTD every MTD product I have ever had has been JUNK!

Good and Bad

I have the LX423 Toro. My previous model had a 38" deck, also from Toro that I purchased back in 2000. The new model is very strong and shoots the grass actually too far. It's as if I need to somehow block or aim the grass to go lower. It will shoot 20' easily.
Another thing, maybe it's a safety feature, I'm not sure, but if all lawn mowers are like this I hate it. To use reverse the mower will kill the engine. Unless you turn the key to the middle position, then press a button. How ridiculous is that. It will continue to work now until the next time it is turned off and started the next time.
To get the old mower to go into reverse, the accelerator pedal had a forward, and then if you pressed it at the other end of the pedal, reverse. Much easier and much quicker. Why a lever to push forward and reverse? There's another lever on top for me to get my hands off the wheel. One to engage the deck, one to raise and lower, another for forward and reverse, one pedal for accelerator, another for brake. It's just too much and not all are needed.
The seat I don't care for either. The new one I feel higher on, bouncier, and I nearly slide off as I'm going sideways on a hill, quite easily. With the old mower it was no problem.
When mowing, I see a lot of grass coming out of the mower at the left of the mower, on the opposite side of the chute.
I would not buy this lawn mower again and I hope this information gives someone else things to consider as they look to make a purchase.

Expert Response
You may want to give the folks at Toro a call, toll free, at (888) 384-9939 to see if the reverse situation is a safety feature or a problem. They will refer you to the closest Warranty Service location if it's a problem.
You may also want to ask them for advice on how to improve the performance of your mower. Be sure to have the serial number of your unit handy when you call Toro.

Awesome machine. My lot isn't but 1/2 acre, but pushing 80, I can't walk that much after a power mower. More than enough for my needs and fun to drive. Should have done it long ago.
Thanks Mowers Direct for the fast and excellent service. You folks are great and will be recommended.
Sincerely,
Waldo P.

80 year old man tackles riding mower
By gerard

Review Posted 07/27/2011
Appears to be a great mower with a great engine. The directions could be simpler. Had to dig up Albert Einsteins body to help me figure out how to get the machine off the pallets. Only fault was the left headlight bulb was not seated in its housing but hanging by its wire no problem to fix.

So far, so good. Getting the mower out of the crate was a job, but once done, put some gas in it and began cutting grass. Has worked perfectly. Very prompt service and reasonable value. I recommend Mowers Direct.

Great Purchase
By Bobby

Review Posted 05/24/2011
I have used my new Toro Tractor Mower and have been pleasantly surprised. It mows much faster with a cleaner job than I ever expected. Controls are located handily and have more power than I'll ever need.
On the down side, all the safety precautions mandated by the government and sue-happy idiots that can't operate machinery in a cautious manner, cause inconvenience and extra motions. I know this is not Toro's fault.
All in all a great purchase.
