TORO LX 466

I bought this two years ago and have had some issues on a 1/2 acre lot (less all the hardscape). The first is that for the most part the brake quit working which means an adventure every time you get off and don't want to shut the motor off. You keep fiddling with the brake until it hooks in, if it doesn't, you call the kids to move whatever it is. BTW-yes, I took it in for service both after and during warranty, and after it cost me $85 for them to lube the brake cable. Brake worked for two weeks, then stopped again. No warranty on service work. Tractor seems to operate slower than it should on rabbit speed, but I don't have anything other than my previous mower to judge that against. On 2nd battery, the 1st battery would not hold a charge. Tractor is about 3 yrs old now.

Good not Great

I'm two weeks in with the Toro LX466 (46", 22hp) and I'm satisfied with it. However it gets stuck on hills or uneven terrain when the back tires fall into a depression.
I have to disengage the transmission and push it out. This has happened twice and in different locations. I grabbed the rubber handle for stability and it split at the base more than half way through.
The deck wheels are at the rear. This puzzles me because I think they should be at the front of the deck so when you encounter uneven terrain the wheels in the front would raise the deck so you don't scalp the grass. I have seen many other brands and most have them on the front and some have them on both front and back (that seems ideal).
I like the three blade configuration which allows you to cut at high speed and not have a thin row of uncut grass that can happen with two blades cutting at a quick pace. The engine is strong and plows through tall grass.
I attached the rear bagger without putting on the high lift blades that come with the bags. The normal blades still create enough force to send all the grass to the bags without clogging when the grass is completely dry. I'm not sure it will perform as well with wet grass.
Before installing the tubes I applied generous amounts of car wax to the inside walls of the tubes in the hope of avoiding clogs. So far, so good.
As far as I can tell there are no knock your socks off features that sets this mower above the rest of the pack in this price range. The other brands have very similar design and construction. It almost looks like one factory makes them all and each company brands them. The exception being John Deere from the dealers, not the big box stores.

Expert Response
You may want to contact Toro Technical Support (toll free) at (888) 384-9939 for advice on setting up your tractor for your particular needs.
We have found that a set of wheel weights, or even wheel weights and tire chains on the back wheels, can be very helpful on uneven terrain.

Outstanding machine. Always remember to charge battery before first use.
The only problem was that my mower was shipped on a pallet enclosed by a metal frame. The mover was also delivered in a semi 40 foot trailer.
I would recommend customers always go for the lift gate. Remember, the trailer floor is still about 5 feet off the ground. Also, check you roads. Can the semi navigate them (don' forget the trees).
You may want to find someone with a forklift or tractor with prongs to help. In my case, the 40 footer parked in the right lane of a small side road. We had to unload one pallet to make enough room to move the Toro to the gate.
A neighbor handled moving the unit to my house as there was no way the 18 wheeler could get there. For a while, we were not sure if the semi could find a place just to turn around.
The real problem is to plan ahead so you can unpack you new unit a lot faster.

Excellent lawn tractor

I researched and compared riding mowers & lawn tractors a great deal online and in stores.
I chose the Toro primarily because of its reputation in the commercial world and its extensive use in cutting golf greens.
I chose to buy online because of the discounted price for the '09 model and for free shipping. I couldn't believe it was actually shipped in a steel cage which I could keep!
The 22 HP Briggs & Stratton enging has plenty of power and I love the 1 pedal operation for both speed and direction.
The 46" deck cuts our lawn in half the time it took the 28" Snapper that it replaced. I was also pleasantly surprised by its turning radius.
Another factor in my decision to buy this particular model was the accessories available, i.e. a blade and a snowblower.
I highly recommend the Toro and Mowers Direct!
