I’m So Glad I Ordered This Mower!

I’m not the type to spend a lot on a mower. The most I’ve ever spent is around $350. After the first time I mowed with this, I was glad I splurged!! Everything about this mower is better than any other mower I’ve ever used. I especially love the personal pace feature. I can’t imagine anyone not liking this mower. The price is high, but it’s worth every penny!! I don’t dread mowing anymore!! vcvc

Hope It Lasts As Long As Prior Toro Super Recycler
By Mark M.

Review Posted 11/13/2020
It's nearly identical to the prior Toro Super Recycler this one with Honda vs. Briggs engine. The performance seems comparable. Flex function of handle more comfortable yet offers less height adjustment options. Despite those minor differences, all parts appear interchangeable with the prior model. The starting cord is slack when not being used. Very disappointing oil fill spout design prevents filling without funnel or dripping. The prior model used stamped, debossed serial number plate current model uses the pressure-sensitive label that easily fell off since cast Al deck has textured vs. smooth painted surface of the prior model.
: /

It's still a high-quality product. Although, Toro cheaped out on features as noted. Honda runs quieter, fuel shutoff allows running carburetor dry in a short time, and fuel tank closes with positive "click" of auto style caps that should prevent moisture pickup by ethanol blend fuels especially if "stabilized" time will prove if Honda powerplant is comparable or superior to 10+year Briggs service.

Excellent Mulcher
By Joseph R.

For reference, I was replacing a Honda HRX217 (13 years old I think). I mention this because people often compare the two. The super recycler is a much better mulcher. It is also lighter and easier to maneuver and backup. It is also a tad quieter. The Honda is better at bagging because the dual blades cut the clippings into smaller pieces. It packs more into the bag. Since I mulch 90% of the time, the Toro is better for me.

I was attracted to the versa mow feature of the Honda years ago, but I used it very infrequently and opening the chute partly further reduced mulching performance. The Honda had the blade break, which was nice (you can get this feature in a toro). If you bag, the blade brake is a must. The super recycler does not leave a trail of grass behind and eliminated the annoying problem of the Honda accumulating grass on the wheel in mulching mode and releasing the clump on the lawn. I was concerned about the smaller engine compared to my Honda, but the 160cc is more than powerful enough. I was skeptical about the personal pace system and read some complaints, but I like it a lot.

The adjustable cruise control speed of the honda was ok, but it's easier for me to set the pace with the personal pace system of the Toro. The density of grass on my lawn is uneven, and it's nice to adjust the pace without shifting a lever. If you want "finer" control use the personal pace system when going around corners etc. I found holding the handlebar with one hand and then using the other to engage the drive bar does the trick.

Both are excellent mowers, but which one is best for you depends on if you predominately mulch or bag.

Mixed Review

Different people use push mowers differently (this one is self-propelled). We have a riding mower and use this mower for around trees, etc. We have another push mower that is not self-propelled with a Honda engine and bagger. It is considerably lighter, and it is very easy to pull backward. The mower being reviewed is very difficult to pull back. So, working around trees and bushes is a lot of work.

It's so much work my wife uses the old mower. This mower would be great for cutting open yards where the majority of mowing is forward. If you like to pull your mower backward, or need a mower to go ahead of or behind your riding mower I would advise against buying this mower. n the open areas of the yard, we have used this mower it has performed excellently.

New Version Of Super Recycler

I like the new Toro super recycler. I waited a long time to get one with the Honda engine, which starts easily and runs well. The mower cuts the lawn well and is lightweight and easy to handle. My only quality issue is with the rear plastic guard. It ripped easily, and a new one is in order. I don't think this part is up to the quality of my older Toro, where this piece lasted the full nine years of use.

The handle was not installed on the mower, and there was no instruction on how to install it. Once installed, the mower works great and starts on the first pull.

Works Great, But Model # 21382 Is Ugly!

I’ve only used it twice, but it appears to work great. It doesn’t leave a grass trail on one side of the mower when in recycle mode. It creates a very fine thatch. This Super Recycler works better than my old Recycler. The old Recycler has been the best piece of lawn equipment I’ve ever owned. I believe the Super Recycler will be better. This model works great, but it is ugly.

I bought this for my mother, and she is tickled pink with it and mows the lawn even more than is probably needed. I can’t speak from personal experience, but she really likes the mulching wet grass feature. She did say it is quite heavy, so without the self propel it is hard to move.

So Far, So Good
By David T.

Review Posted 08/10/2020
After 17 years my old faithful Toro Recycler finally died. Prior to buying the old machine, I had had some bad experiences with self-propelled mowers... specifically an old Craftsman. My theory was that the basic lawnmower... engine, blade and four wheels, would last forever. The weak link in longevity was the self-propelled systems, which adds complexity to the machine. Since I was using a recycler with no bag, I never minded pushing the machine around the lawn. My quarter acre lot was small enough that the push was not a factor.

When the old machine finally did meet its end (engine failure... speculated a broken ring), I discovered that push only machines from Toro were not an option.

I initially attempted to purchase my replacement machine at the commercial Toro service center where I bought the old machine 17 years back. After about an hour of discussing my needs and options, the tech basically advised me to go with the Honda engine model. It was a little more money (hence the VALUE rating is only GOOD), but the Honda engine seemed to be the preferred engine not only at the dealer but also in the forums.

I was unable to find the Honda engine model at the local Home Depot, or any other place locally. So, I went online and discovered Mowers Direct.

I was a little hesitant to purchase a mower over the internet... What happens if it arrives damaged, or not working, or any other reason that I may need to raise a dispute. After reading several reviews and watching some videos that showed how simple the initial setup is with a brand new machine (add oil, add fuel, pull the cord) I opted to purchase online.

Then I hit the next snag... The Honda engine version of this machine was on back-order until July 23, which at the time was about 3 weeks out. I still felt it was worth the wait to get the Honda engine... The fact that EVERYONE seemed to be out of stock for this machine was an indicator of the demand for it.

I hired a local lawn service for a month and gave Mowers Direct plenty of time to deliver the machine... and if it was still on backorder, I would have extended my local service a month (and enjoy not mowing for the hottest part of the summer).

In the end, I had the machine delivered on July 20, three days before I expected/hoped it would even be shipped. My guess is their backorder dates are set sufficiently far into the future to manage customer expectations. I don't know this for a fact... but I was delighted when the machine arrived early.

The setup of the machine was super simple... Add oil and fuel. I was not familiar with the bagger but it was simple. There's also a side discharge port and a plug for recycling (which was installed). It took me a few minutes to figure out how these parts worked... the international drawings were pretty useless... they only seem to make sense AFTER you figure out what you are looking for.

I have mowed my small lawn two times so far. Each time the engine fires up with an easy pull of the cord. The bagger is easy to detach and reattach, though I have figured out that I can mow the entire lawn without dumping the bag in the middle of the process.

The "personal pace" self-propelled drive system is pretty sweet. It is very intuitive and didn't take any time to get the hang of it. The only exception to that is when I need to go backward. There is a little trick to get the wheels to disengage so they roll backward easily. This is not a major factor, but it did take a bit of experience to figure it out.

Resetting the height of the blade is easy and smooth.

I have not changed the oil yet, but the instructions indicate to tip the machine on its side to let the oil drain out the fill tube. My old machine had a drain plug in the bottom of the machine, which I think I prefer. Since I haven't drained the oil yet, I still don't know how I feel about draining the oil out the fill tube.

Since it is a new machine, I have not attempted to change the blade or air filter, so I can't comment on how that will go. There is a fuel petcock/valve... I'm not sure what the purpose of it is. Maybe it's useful when transporting the machine? I would advise not closing the valve. I can see myself taking 20 minutes to figure out why the machine stopped running... the fuel petcock was shut off.

Finally, the drive mechanism... The reliability of the personal pace system will have to be fleshed out with years (hopefully) of hassle-free use. There's probably a way to disengage the self-propelled drive, but this machine is considerably heavier than my old push machine.

Time will tell.
