Toro 38182 Reviews & Ratings

We bought a new one just a little over 3 years ago blower started great for two years and then boom its a door stop. It wont start I am a mechanic and it used to start up right away now I have to fiddle with it to even get it to turn over. I will say this machine is like a spark plug it could last 10 years or last two starts, I have another one I inherited from a family member which was older and it starts better than the new one. Very very disappointing that the starter even went bad on the new machine I am going to say Open Motor 4 stroke engines are the way to go it will throw the heavier snow farther and a lot more easier.

I do think that the 2 cycle is easy for people who get a minimum of snow 2-3 inches. If you get any thing more, buy a 4 stroke from Toro, I had one of those for YEARS.... and the blower would pull and electric start every time no problem. Coming from a mechanic stand point these things are a pain in the butt to work on and maintain certain parts. Don't get me wrong, if you do the normal maintenance on the machine it will do you good in the long run. But i have had people come to me with problems on the machine and the places around here want a small fortune for labor and parts.

If you do not want to run into similar problems BUY A 4 STROKE and you will be a lot happier.

GO big or Go home.

I have had my Toro for 12 years and it is still going STRONG!! I have had to replace the paddles 3 times in 12 years. That is not bad considering I am in MN. I would buy another Toro snow thrower anytime!!

Thanks

Lightweight unit with a heavyweight heart

I bought my first Toro snowblower back in 1987. It was a larger single stage model, around 6.5 H.P., and it still starts and runs like new to this day. It was, however, too heavy to easily put in a car to transport so in 2000 I purchased a Toro Powerlite 38182 with the 3.25 H.P. Tecumseh engine.

This has been a super reliable snowblower and is a pleasure to use. Originally I used the electric start a lot but lately I have been using the manual starter and it starts on the second or third pull. The only service I have done is to change the spark plug once or twice and replace the paddles, scraper bar, and belt as needed.

I was disappointed to learn that 2009 was the last year this 2 cycle was produced so I began my quest to search for any remaining closeouts to no avail. I did find a couple of lightly used ones on eBay, (one was only used 4 times and the other only one season), and I purchased both of them. I would highly recommend this snowblower to anyone who can find one, even if it is used. They are very easy to maintain and parts are readily available from your Toro dealer.

Pound for pound, the best machine I've ever owned
By Jim

The machine starts easily and will move wet snow like the big boys but is easier to maneuver in tight spaces. The balanced carry-handle makes it a breeze to take to the upper deck and clear areas that would have had to be done with a shovel or a weaker electric model.

I live in the snow belt in southern Ontario and this lil' guy turns heads when I'm using it. I now see the same model in other driveways.

Works great when I can get it started
By Bruce Moser

This works great when I can get it started. It floods easily and sits more than it runs. I can't get it started now when we just got the worst snow in 10 years. Nice door stop. I will never buy a 2 cycle again.

SBD RESPONDS: The gas/oil mix can separate when it sits for a while, making it hard to start. You could try rocking the blower to agitate the fuel mix; or call the folks at Toro toll free at (888) 384-9939 for other starting tips.
