My Home Depot zero turn toro
By Wendell S.
Mansfield, Ohio
Review Posted 05/19/2013
I purchased my 42 inch z mower 11-07-12. Since I live in Ohio I never had to use it until this spring, So I went to my storage shed to get it out and the battery was dead, so I charged it. Got it started and it would not move. i called the # for service and they came 2 days later to pick it up transported it 50 miles for repair. They said the electric brake control module was bad and replaced it. 2 weeks I got it back and I actually got to cut my grass. When my grass needed cut again the battery was dead I called repair # and they wanted to pick my mower up take it 50 miles put in a new battery and return it the next day. I went to Home Depot and they traded me a new battery. So now I am ready to mow . I went to my shed the next day started the mower and when I moved the motion control levers out of park the engine would die. so I checked the wiring connections I jiggled the wiring harness and it started and I moved it out of my shed and cut my lawn was finishing up stopped the mower got off to open a gate got back on mower was dead would not do anything, so I pushed it to my shed and called repair. They came 3 days later and picked it up and took it for repair. It is now May 19th and I have cut my grass with my 32 year old 20 inch self propelled Snapper mower 3 times and my neighbor has cut it for me with his 8 year old John Deere rider. As of this date they still have my mower in repair.

Worst Mower Ever

2011 Toro Timecutter SS4235. Piece of junk! Always started poorly. When I first got it home and tried to start it, I had to open the choke all the way to get it to start. Then, the chock had to remain wide open, or it would stall. I finally identified the problem with the open choke issue. The carburetor was damaged by fuel being left in it for several months as it rested in the Home Depot warehouse. I had the carburetor replaced and now the choke operates properly, but still starts only after many seconds of running the starter. The next problem the following season, again the mower would not start. Eventually the battery goes dead. Recharge the battery and now all I get is clicks when I turn the starter key. Bought a new battery, same thing. Apparently there is some kind of electrical problem or starter burn out. At any rate, I am very disappointed and unhappy with this poorly designed lawn mower. Buy it at your own risk!

Turns on a dime

I am 80 yrs. old and I'm enjoying the mower very much. I get to use it every two weeks mowing my one and half acres of lawn.
I do my lawn a lot shorter time. I love the way it turns on a dime. I have found out you can get to close to a ditch and wind up in that ditch. I have learned not to get to close to the ditches!

This mower is the Cat's Meow! Runs so good and cuts about 30 minutes off of my mowing time. I looked at a lot of mowers before buying this one and for the price and no tax and free shipping this is a no brainer! I ordered it on a Thursday and it arrived on Tuesday in Florida! Thanks Mowers Direct.

Love Our New Mower!
By Bonnie

Review Posted 09/09/2011
Living in SW Florida, our growing season starts in April and ends in early December, with weekly mowing. We ordered this Zero Turn mower after much research and could not be happier with our purchase. My husband is a maintenance junkie and we added the time meter to the order to keep track of scheduled maintenance. Our old riding mower is 12 years old and after many repairs and replacements is still very dependable. Our reason for wanting a zero turn was purely a want. We added also the "lift gate" service for delivery. This is a must for residential deliveries. The driver was great and smart enough to position the pallet in our garage with the rear wheels of the mower towards the outside of the garage which proved to be important when it came time to back the mower off the shipping pallet. We removed the wooden stiffeners from the shipment box which later were key in backing the mower off the pallet. As my husband inched the mower backwards from the pallet, I placed these boards behind the front wheels, moving the boards over and over again until the front wheels cleared the pallet. Wah lah it was off. I had read reviews about other customers having trouble getting the mower off the pallet base, but if you are clever, it is simple. The operation of the mower is like anything else, you have to practice. Once you find yourself actually mowing without "thinking" about the controls, then you pretty much are ready for anything. The first week, my husband was NOT allowed in the back yard as we live on water. He now is mowing everywhere with the mower. Much like a personal pace, you control your speed by how far forward you push the handles so even low speed can be be controlled. After mowing, the wash connection is so easy to use and while you have the garden hose on, turn on the mower deck for added spin action and cleaning. We ordered also the engine guard which was smart and for peace of mind. After mowing, the lawn has a perfectly smooth look and I actually look forward to the grass growing.

I got use to the mower, cause this is the first time with a zero turn mower. I have no problem with the unit.
I do need the bag unit that goes with it. I just ordered it. I have a lot of leaves to pick up in the fall.

Mowers Direct was awesome to deal with - from finding the item I wanted, placing the order, payment, and delivery! Customer Service really is something they take seriously and do well. The mower pulls to the left, but my husband assures me it is a simple adjustment that he can do.
Would definitely purchase through Mowers Direct again, and would recommend you to my friends! THANK YOU!

Nice Mower BUT Comes With a Problem
By G.R.

Review Posted 08/03/2011
I recently purchased the SS4235. The whole transaction with Mowers Direct was great. I ran the mower 3 times with no issues but on the fourth mowing, a problem developed where the engine would stall when the motion control levers were engaged. The problem occurred even if one of the motion control arms was engaged. After much research and absolutely no response from Toro, I found out that there is a service bulletin that indicates there is a problem with a bur on the brake arm assemblies that prevents the brake arms from sliding properly. This is a fix as fail issue and the factory is not correcting before shipping the mower. The problem is covered under warranty but if you cannot take it to the shop yourself then it will cost you to have it transported.

I'm about a month and a half into my grass cutting, and I've cut my time for a 1 acre lawn with a couple dozen trees to get around from over 3 hours to about 50 minutes, with the best looking lawn I've ever had. I love the the machine, have had no problems, and its fun - as my old self-propelled Toro was getting to be a significant chore. Being 67 and in great health and shape, I still get a bit of a workout with a riding mower which I am pleased with, as compared to a 3 hour hard and maybe overkill workout. Thanks Toro

So far, it's all good

Purchased this mower today 7-11-2011. The learning curve is a little more than I expected, though my 13 year old daughter took right to it...Of course! I got stuck twice, the rear end of these things seem a little light and its not posi-traction, so be careful is all I can say when you start out. Word of caution, stay clear of any embankments. If if looks questionable, just use the trimmer, you can find yourself in trouble REAL quick as a noob.
I was push mowing my yard in about 2 and 3 quarters of an hour (Yup, almost 3 hours total, not a type-o). I completed the entire yard with two stops (As I said, I got stuck) in about 1 hour with the Toro ss4235. Not bad for a first time out! I might add that was at the "Low" speed setting. I can't imagine someone actually crazy enough to try and mow on "High".
I think over all a ZTR may NOT be a good choice for someone who isn't willing to keep their mower clean and serviced. There are grease points for the front wheels and for the mower deck, the dealer said there were no recommendations for when to grease, but it's still a little more than your typical riding mower. Dealer says first oil change after 5 hours then every 50 after. I am a firm believer in keeping the engine oiled and filtered, topped off and the air filer clean.
Again, I really believe if you are committed to keeping a ZTR in shape, your going to like how FAST you get your work done, really, I am impressed, and that doesn't come easy with me. Ok, you will notice I did not rate the mower quite as highly as I could have. One reason only so far...Noise. I don't mean engine noise, though it is loud, it is a power tool. I mean the deck (Or something down there) rattles a lot, right off the first mow. Makes me wonder about future service. I also notice the blades engage with the push of a button and the steering-speed is controlled by the handle bars. It makes me wonder what kind of repair bills I will be looking at in 3 or 4 years. When people spend this kind of money on a mower, they expect long lasting equipment...Time will tell.
Overall, this is the right mower in this price range, I read all the reviews at all the sites for all the other brands, this is the one I (I really did spend 2 weeks doing iResearch). So, stop reading and start mowing! PEACE!
