Difficult Mower
By Eugene H.

Review Posted 09/02/2023
I bought this mower new and have had it for 5 mowing seasons. It worked great the first season. After that, it was simply a piece of work and a headache.
Two new batteries and it needs a third one.
Needed a new park switch and PTO switch.
New starter solenoid.
Hard to start, either a weak starter, or a bad battery. It acts like it just barely can start the engine. It turns over very hard at first, and then finally can get the engine spinning. A new battery helps this issue but doesn't solve it.
Seems to not charge the battery.
Steering is temperamental. I need to muscle the steering especially when backing up. NOT smooth at all. The hydros make a lot of noise.
It does hold hills though very good, that I must give it credit for!
I have not had a good experience with the reliability of these mowers. It is very frustrating when you go to mow and the battery is dead or it just so gets started. And to know that each season you probably will need to get it repaired and have downtime.
NOT so sweet!!

Bought this mower a year ago and liked the way it handled. That was especially important for my wife. Also she is not a big fan of the paddle type steering. For the most part, it did well for the first part of the season. Soon the steering began to "hang up. It became somewhat difficult to steer. Had "Hard spots you really had to muscle through. This spring I sent the mower to my dealer for another issue and told them to fix the steering. They had the mower 3-4 days and called me and said they will be returning the mower. I was told that the steering "worked pretty good." Not, your mower is fixed but it's pretty good. I don't see any difference and don't accept "pretty good. I expect that it is as good as new. I am glad the dealer does not sell airplanes. "We looked at your propeller and it functions "pretty good". Not good enough!!! I promise the first chance I get, it will be sold or traded for a different brand

I only have about 10 hrs on the clock, but so far no issues. Plenty of power, nice cut, and fast. We have went from 2.5 hours to cut our yard to about 20 min.

I only have 4 hrs on the clock but so far it has been good. I didn't think I would like the zero turn with a steering wheel but it works great.
It is difficult to have a beverage and a smoke and drive a zero turn with two levers, not a problem with this machine.

Great Mower

I am a big person and I can not fit on a regular riding mower but with this mower I have plenty of room to get on and off. I use to have to wait for my kids to mow my lawn with my old mower but with this mower I can mow my lawn myself.
The mower works great and I mow my lawn in half the time than we use to. The hardest thing I had with this mower was getting it out of the packing crate.

First 1.1 hours, it worked great

After uncrating the mower, reading the manual and making sure to follow all the do's and dont's started mowing. Worked great for the first 1.1 hours and then I shut it down to fill it up with gas, went to start it back up and nothing but clicks.
Took it into to my local dealer and the starter hand gone out. After about a week it was fixed and haven't had a problem since - crossing my fingers no other surprises happen.

1 month and back at dealer

Bought this mower because my wife wanted the steering wheel and I wanted zero turn and got this as a compromise. After a month and a half, the steering went out and it wouldn't turn to the right. And the left-rear tire drags and messes up the yard. I wish I would have went with the lever zero turn instead of steering wheel!

After a lot of research I decided to purchase this mower, and I am glad I did. I have 2 acres that I used a pull behind previously to cut. Over 2 hours to cut with that, but my first use with the SWX5050 and I was done in 45 minutes.
I have slopes, tight areas, and rough patches in my lawn. This mower handled everything I threw at it. This machine is awesome and would not hesitate to purchase it.

Great serivce, great delivery. great price.

Delivery: I got lift-gate service to the front of my garage and there were no problems with delivery. A damage inspection is recommended but you can only see the outside of the crate and the carrier does not wait around for you to open it. There was no significant damage to the outside of the crate and no damage to the mower. Carrier was SAIA.
Unpacking: It is a bit difficult to get out of the crate. I cut/ripped the cardboard away with a hammer and nail puller and started removing screws but could not get to all of them with my power driver. So I cut the crate apart with a sawzall around the mower and removed it in pieces. I had to lift the front of the mower with a floor jack to get the bottom parts of the crate out. There are no unpacking instructions. If you don't have tools and skills to get it out safely, you should go to a regular dealer.
Final Assembly and Startup: The separate assembly instructions are pretty straightforward. I went thru the checklist to do final assembly (seat mount and cable clamping, steering wheel install, tow bar) and prepare for use. I also checked and adjusted tire pressure, oil level (good), and transmission fluid. The only abnormal item was the transmission fluid reservoir did not have any visible fluid in it. I added a few ounces of the recommended weight oil to bring it up to the recommended fill level. There was no evidence of leaking so i assume it just wasn't filled to spec at the factory. Battery was adequately charged for first startup but i put it on a trickle charger/maintainer overnight after first startup and it accepted charge at least a few hours before going into maintain mode.
Operators Manual: Not like any other i have ever seen. It is heavy on complex symbols and light on text. After reading it, and staring at the figures a while and thumbing around, I pretty much figured it out.
Operation: It mows and maneuvers pretty good except: when my wife was mowing, the deck jumped off the left rear hanger twice. When this happens, the left rear side of the deck drags and if you don't notice it immediately, it will make an uneven mess of the lawn. Our lawn has some rough spots and slopes, and she was mowing with deck on next to the lowest setting so it may have hit the ground and picked the left side up enough to disengage the hangar. It took a few minutes to figure out how to remove the front hanger (pull a pin and push it out), then realign and hang the left rear, then put the front hangar back in and re-pin. So i know how to do that now. As a temporary fix, i put some nylon wire ties on the hook around the hangar bar so the hook cant jump off and it didn't happen again. I will contact Toro to get their input.
