Tiller started ok when I first got it, but would not shut off. Took an hour or so to find the loose connection to the shut off switch. This indicated to me poor quality control at the factory. Used this season and had less than 7 hours on the machine and had to take it in for repairs.
Transmission had failed and had to be replaced. Fortunately covered by warranty, but would have been a $586 bill had it not been. That is on a tiller I paid $900 for. What will next season bring?
I'm not at all satisfied with the performance. It takes multiple passes over to the same spot and I still had to take a hoe to get things broken up properly. It is very hard to handle and/or turn. Big mistake in buying this product.

Good - not great

I got this being super excited to finally own my own Troy-Bilt tiller! Out of the crate the it went together just fine.
It came with a bottle of oil suggesting that you need to add your own out of the box. The oil both in the tiller and in the bottle are VERY clear which makes it really hard to tell with a good measure of accuracy your level in the engine.
Tilling is good however the vertical action may not be the best for mixing things INTO the soil - like top of dirt to bottom....
The engine on this could be larger for sure! Again, because of the vertical type action you end up "mixing" a lot of dirt! When you go full depth the engine can struggle even in soil that has already been tilled.
Also, its slow like other reviews that have been posted. But yeah - its SLOW! Understandable when tilling because of how it works however if you are trying to roll up hill or around the yard and cant push - whew boy settle in, you will take a long while.
Also very disappointed that this tiller is made in CHINA...
If I had it to do over again I would go with a "normal" tiller...

Bought this because I needed a tiller for rough ground and thought this might do the job, I was very impressed with how smooth it worked thru my ground it is slow mover but when it moves thru the soil is tilled very well as much as I didn't like the cost I would buy this one again

Take the time to learn--it's a great tiller

I like this tiller a lot
Out of the box, I would have given this three stars, but now that I have learned to use it, I give it 4.5. Since the rating system is only integer based that rounds to 5, but be advised.
You have to get used to the fact that under its own power it is just a very slow mover. That doesn't matter much when you are tilling but it will when you are trying to move it uphill to, say, the garage.
Having said that, this little beast has some wonderful new features. Unlike a traditional TB rear-tined machine, you can stand this one on a spot and it will dig down without moving when it hits some resistance. That means you can dig a nice hole for rhubarb or a tree without the back and forth or the kicks of the more traditional TBs.
The really cool part about it is that it also doesn't kick when in normal tilling mode which makes it very easy to guide and work. I don't think there is an easier machine in the world for this kind of tilling. I am running mine through the very heavy clay of Fauquier County in Northern Virginia and it isn't giving me any serious talkback when in the ground.
The other reason I can't give it five stars (though I really like it!) is because it is a bear to turn around. If you raise the rear end to make a quick turn--like you would with a more traditional TB--the counterweight will quickly ground and prevent you.
That and the slow forward speed are small prices to pay for a really nifty and innovative machine.

Works Much Better Than You Might Think!

Was in need of a new tiller, and hated the thought of spending over a grand on a new one, even though I knew I would like the forward rotating tines of the Pony tiller. I wasn't too keen on counter rotating tines, so I decided to give the new Troy Bilt VTT a chance.
I was skeptical at first, but after using the tiller once, I was blown away by how well it worked. Plowed through my hard clay in no time. Very impressive. Was kind of jerky when the tines hit the side of the garden or when coming to the end of a row and the tines hit that unploughed dirt. The dirt is pushed out to the sides a bit, but it's not too bad.
The motor did bog down and even died a couple times when I set the depth pin too deep. I didn't particularly like that part, but I can understand why it wanted to bog down like that. When the tilled dirt was really deep toward the end, the tiller did have a tendency to lean a bit to one side, so you have to control it more at that point.
I have read a couple reviews at certain sites that say this tiller is way too slow. While I agree that it is very slow, once you are tilling with it, that speed is perfect. My main issue with this tiller is that to engage the forward drive to get it up a hill and into my yard, the tines also have to spin. It would be so much better if you could operate both of them, independent of the other.
Overall, I would recommend this tiller. It is a great alternative to a counter rotating tine tiller. If you love a forward rotating tine model, then you might want to stick with that type, but you can't go wrong with this vertical tine model either.
