Troy-Bilt with Briggs & Stratton Engine is a scrap
By Irina B.
Denver, Colorado
Review Posted 09/03/2016
Poor design equipment and poor quality metal. It started to fall apart since first time use: I had to replace all hinges because metal on hinges broke from vibration. Hopper for leaves is useless since it clogs all the time and to feed it by small portions is meaningless. Anyway hopper is broken too, so I had to remove it and close the hole with a piece of metal.

When I thought that all weak points are reinforced by heavy duty hinges, bolts etc. welding on muffler broke - I had to replace the muffler. Engine is also made out of poor quality metal and plastic. Plastic cover of the engine is broken and I can't start the chipper.

And this chipper never could process 3" as it was promised by manufacturer - I barely could process 2" branches. Never again any equipment of Troy-Bilt or with engine. Briggs and Stratton - no quality and bad customer service for replacement parts.

Only a Troy Built would last 35 years.

My old Tomahawk finally gave up, the bearing, not the Briggs and Stratton engine, after 35 years.

Ordered a replacement and am very happy with it. It is lighter than the old one and better balanced for movement, and I really like the bagger to collect the chips in. The only suggestion I have for improvement is an easy accessible door on the front to clear sticks that cause jams especially if you turn off the chipper with a stick down in the bottom.

Some of the posted comments state that the chipper is hard to start. I will not buy any type yard or garden machinery that is not equipped with a Briggs and Stratton engine. The reason is due to the easy starting. You must understand how to properly use the choke.

Somewhat Disappointing

I bought the equipment and it arrived on 5/29/15. A week later I wanted to use it and the first problem I encountered was the hard-starting. I called Troy-Bilt and I was informed that the engine is covered by the manufacturer of the engine as such I had to call engine company. The lady told me that I should have seen that on the manual - except that the manual only came after I bought the equipment. Unfortunately, after spending almost $1,000 for this equipment, it has failed me because of the difficulty of starting.

We are sorry to hear about your experience with the chipper shredder you purchased. The engine would be covered under its own warranty, but at the same time, the manufacturer should have tried to help. There are a couple different reasons why an engine may be hard starting, it could be the fuel. You want to make sure you are using fresh fuel at all times. Carburetors on power equipment can be pretty temperamental when it comes to ethanol and if the fuel is not fresh, this can cause problems with starting. You could try using a fuel treatment to keep the gas fresh but also help clear out any deposits in the carb. The other issue could be a finicky choke or if you did not choke the engine at all before starting. If neither of these issues are the actual issue, then it may need to go into a service center to be evaluated by a Briggs & Stratton technician. Either way if you need some assistance in anything, please feel free to give us a call 800-710-7499.

Well built machine that does the job I need for my yard.

I am happy with the way the machine performs so far. It starts easier than the Mighty Mac I previously owned and it has more power. It mulches leaves and small twigs and branches very well. It is just what I needed for my yard.

Would make another selection
By Bill J.

I have had this chipper for 10 years, using it 6 to 10 times a year for 2-3 hours shredding leaves and small branches in a typical residential environment. Over the years, I have rebuilt the unit twice over, at no small expense for parts and effort. The unit functions well enough out of the box, but over time it will break apart.

The metal will fatigue and fail in a variety of places - none cheap to repair or replace. There are bolts that will work loose, drop into the hopper, breaking internal parts which further increases imbalances and vibrations that further weaken the unit. While performance was fine, the value of the purchase is questionable given the short lifespan and regular repairs. Mine goes to the curb this weekend and I hope to find a better designed unit...

If you'll be using it frequently or for extended periods of time, you may want to step up to a semi-pro or commercial grade chipper/shredder.

This model is a mid-grade, which will give you better quality and features than an entry-level model, so it's ideal for using more than twice a year and for an hour or so at a time.

You might be better suited with a semi-pro model given the number of times a year and periods of time you use yours.

Bad experience

I waited excitedly for my new chipper. I tried to follow the directions for adding oil to the chipper after it arrived.

I ran the chipper a few minutes and shutting it off and trying to restart it again I found that it was frozen and I could not get the engine to turn over. I called the factory and they told me to call Briggs and Stratton who told me to go to a dealer.

I am currently waiting for the dealer in our area to show up.

Needless to say, this has not been a good experience

Work Horse

This is my first chipper spreader but I put it to the test between last fall and this summer. I cut down about 9 large Oak trees and chipped everything I could fit into this machine, I even rigged it so I didn't have to empty the bag so it could run continuous until it ran out of gas or was shut off. I made a custom attachment in place of the bushel bag to keep the chips under control. It makes working with this machine a breeze. Other than it is a bit loud but what chipper out there isn't, remember your chipping wood it has to be loud, have you ever heard a quiet industrial chipper? I didn't think so.

Pros:
Durable, Easy To Use, Reliable, High Quality
Works fine, lasts a long time

After researching the spectrum of chipper/shredders from the high priced to the inexpensive, I found this to be a good middle ground. Not so expensive that its unaffordable for the average home owner and not so inexpensive that its low quality. Starts on the first or second pull every time. One tank of gas outlasts me. Reduction is as advertised, 10:1.

Two warnings:
1. Wear your ear protection. The thing is loud, both the engine and the grinding noise were unexpectedly loud.

2. If you have to load/unload it into your pickup truck, bring a friend, its heavy, not a one person job.

A GREAT PRODUCT!!

Worked as advertised.

After it was unpacked i found one loose bolt at the base of the large chute. Took longer to find my tools than it did to torque it down.

Started on the first pull.

Finished what I thought was a half day of limbs and leaves in two hours.!!

Excellent Chipper - Shredder
By Peter

Review Posted 12/15/2012
I received the shipment in a timely manner and in excellent condition. No assembly needed and very little to do in order to began using the equipment.

It started on the second pull and worked flawlessly. It reduced my leaf shredding by a good hour from my old shredding machine. Limbs are chipped up very fast and without having to push them the way my old machine needed.

I am well pleased and would highly recommend this equipment to anyone.
