Inflator Buyer's Guide

How to Pick the Perfect Inflator

By Dale V.  |  Power Equipment Expert

Portable inflators are extremely convenient to have around the house or on the road. Whether you're dealing with a flat tire or need to inflate a collection of pool toys, having the right inflator sure beats a hand pump.

We offer two main types of inflators: 12-volt and 120-volt.

12-Volt Inflators

These 12-volt inflators clamp directly onto your vehicle's battery, and some can connect to a cigarette lighter using an adapter.

Depending on the model, these machines typically produce 60-120 PSI of air pressure. Most come with a power cord, so you can widen your work area. Look for models that feature different inflation tips that will let you inflate a wide variety of items.

120-Volt Inflators

For the ultimate at-home inflator, choose a 120-volt model. Look for ones that include an inflation kit for use on everything from toys to tires.

The 120-volt inflators tend to be more powerful than their 12-volt counterparts, with some providing up to 130 PSI of air pressure. I recommended wall-mounted models with a retractable hose that free up space in your garage.

Cordless Inflators

Cordless inflators are the best of both worlds. They include rechargeable batteries, so you're no longer tied to a power cord.

Plus, most cordless inflators include 12-volt and 120-volt adapters. In other words, you can recharge the batteries on the road or at home.
