How We Picked the Best Inverter Generators

When recommending the top inverter generators, we take four features into account.

Power

With inverter generators, the proof is in the power. We consider each generator's power potential for a given use, which involves looking at both surge and running wattage.

Surge wattage is the extra, temporary wattage a generator can produce to start electric motors. Running wattage is how much wattage the generator can produce long term. We also consider parallel capability or whether the inverter can be linked with another one to double the power.

Usability

Inverter generators are known for great features that make them a joy to use, no matter who you are. Wireless Bluetooth controls, carbon monoxide detection, low oil warnings, and energy-saving modes are all features that make the best inverter generators stand out from the pack. We also consider other ease-of-use features like size, weight, maintenance, and more. Anything you can think of that impacts the user experience is fair game to evaluate here.

Versatility

A versatile inverter generator is one that can easily adapt to different scenarios and applications. One area we consider is whether it's dual fuel or can switch between running on gasoline and propane. This can come in handy if a hurricane has caused a local gasoline shortage because you can then switch to propane.

Power receptacles are another feature that could make or break a generator's versatility. Having a mixture of standard household outlets, where you can plug in a fridge or microwave, and heavier-duty locking outlets that can handle 240 volts is ideal. For example, a 50A 120/240V outlet on your generator lets you plug it into a manual transfer switch to power your electric panel.

Overall Value

We prioritize performance over price, so you won't necessarily find the cheapest inverter generators on our list. That's why, instead of evaluating a generator on price alone, we look at what you're getting for the price to arrive at an overall value rating.

Inverter Generator FAQs

What is the Difference Between a Conventional Generator and an Inverter?

Unlike traditional portable generators, inverters use a built-in computer to stabilize the power produced by the generator. We call this "cleaning up" the power because it prevents the surges in voltage and frequency variations common in traditional generators. This allows you to safely plug in sensitive electronic devices, like smartphones and computers, into the inverter without worrying about causing them damage.

Besides providing more stable power, portable inverter generators also operate more efficiently than traditional generators. They can adjust their engine speed depending on the power demand. For example, if you are only powering one item, the engine will run more slowly than if you needed to power two, which saves energy. Traditional generator engines run at one speed, no matter how much or how little power is needed.

Inverter generators also have a closed frame over the engine. The insulated frame muffles the engine sounds, which is why inverter generators are significantly quieter than traditional portable units. Watch the video below to see me conduct a noise test between the two. Also, learn more in our ultimate inverter generator guide.

What are Inverter Generators Used for?

Due to their generally lower power output, inverter generators aren't typically used for emergency home backup unless you're paralleling two of them or have a particularly high-wattage one. Instead, they're perfect for powering nearly any recreational hobby you can think of, including:

That's not to say you can't use them at all for home backup. You can absolutely use an inverter generator to power necessities during a power outage, and certain models can even connect to a manual transfer switch.

What does it mean to parallel generators?

To parallel two generators means to connect them with cables for double the power output. Those generators are then said to be running "in parallel." Since inverter generators are usually less powerful than their open-frame counterparts, pairing two of them can help make up the gap.

However, you can't parallel any two generators. In many cases, you can only connect two generators of the same brand and model. If you are able to pair two different inverter generators, you need to make sure they have the same amperage and voltage. To learn more, you can read our guide on how to parallel two generators.
