Answer

You should always drill a "weep" hole in your discharge pipe to help prevent air lock in your discharge pipe between the discharge port of the pump and the check valve. I recommend drilling a 1/8" or 3/16" diameter hole about 4" up from the base of the discharge port of your pump into your PVC discharge pipe. Drill the hole at a 45 degree angle with the hole pointing toward the bottom of your sump basin.

Answer

Generally, sump pumps are not recommended for use in a water softener and/or laundry application. Just about all manufacturers will void the warranty if the pump is installed and fails in this application. You might check out our selection of LAUNDRY / DRAIN PUMP SYSTEMS as most of these self contained systems are designed for laundry and water softener applications.

Hi Jim I have a handful of questions about your StormPro BA-50M. 1. How adjustable is the float switch? I get that I can mount it on the discharge hose and make the pump turn on at any height I choose. But can I, for example, set the pump to turm on at 25" and turn off at 3"? Or do I have a limited range of play between the on/off settings? 2. Is the manual override switch physically located on the pump casing or is there an option for remote control via a cord? 3. Is the outlet port 2" FNPT? 4. Is the float switch mercury free? 5. Is there any way I can get my hands on the user manual prio to purchasing this pump? (PDF download or similar?) 6. And... do you sell to Fed. Gov Agencies? If yes, do you have a special department or person that I need to contact? Thanks! Have a great day!

Answer

The vertical float switch for the StormPro pumps have a 6-1/2" differential, so they will only pump out between 6-1/2" - 7" of water no matter what height you clamp it down at. For more control on your pump run time, you might consider the Pro Series - Standard Controller System w/ Dual Vertical Float Switch, model DFC1 which will activate the pump for 10 seconds once the float drops to it's original position or the Pro Series - Deluxe Controller System w/ Dual Vertical Float Switch, model DFC2, which gives you the option of setting your pump run time from 5-45 seconds once the float drops to it's original position.

The StormPro pump does not provide for a manual override switch. If you wish to use the pump manually, you simply remove the vertical float switch and plug the pump into your AC outlet direct.

The discharge port on the BA-50M is a 2" female NPT.

The float switch is, as all are required to be, mercury free.

Hi Jim! I own a couple 1/2's and a 1/3 hp storm pros. I just saw that they are not "Oil Free" pumps, does that mean they need any oil maintenance, why would they mention it otherwise? Didn't see any oil notes elsewhere. Thank you!

The StormPro pumps are oil filled to help keep the pump cool and generally do not require any oil maintenance. This is usually mentioned on all our pumps since some are oil filled and some are not. The non-oil filled pumps are considered water-cooled and are safe for applications that might require a continuous duty waterfall in a fish pond or some other environment that would include aquatic life.

The StormPro model BA-50M, 1/2HP sump pump is designed to be operated on 120 volts AC. There currently is no battery capable of powering a 120 volt primary sump pump. The only possible options would be an AUXILARY POWER SYSTEM which will operate up to a 1/2HP pump for up to 10-12 hours continuous or 24-36 hours non-continuous, a complete BATTERY BACKUP SYSTEM or looking into the possibility of installing a STANDBY GENERATOR.

Answer

That really depends on the pump. Some are more efficient than others. For example, the 1/3HP Basement Watchdog model BW1033 has a running amp rating of 3.5 and a starting amp rating of 7. When you figure the watts by the formula of amps times volts equals watts ( A X V = W), you get 420 running watts and 840 starting watts. But when you look at the Zoeller 1/3HP model M53, that pump has a running amp rating of 9.6 and a starting amp rating of 29.6 or 1152 running watts and 3552 starting watts.

I understand that the BA-33M has a switch differential of 6-1/2 inches. Can I modify it with a longer rod to increase that differential and thus further cycling?

I would like to buy the storm pro 1/3 hp pump but would like level switch to control over a longer span (deep pit with higher flow rates at times) want to minimize cycles. Is there a different longer switch rod that can replace the stock version.

Answer

Unfortunately not! Your only options would be the Pro Series Ultimate Sensor Pump Controller System, model USC3 or the Superior Pump Wide Angle Tether Float Switch w/ Piggyback Plug, model 92005. The Pro Series switch can be adjusted to pump for 5 - 45 seconds once the water level drops below the sensor and the Superior tether float has an adjustable pumping range of 7” to 36”.

Jim, looking to understand the power consumption of the StormPro 1/2HP Model BA-50M pump. If its 1/2 HP at 120V, that converts to 375watts or 3.1 Amps by standard conversion. The pump is rated at 5.1 amps constant which converts to 615 watts at 120V or over 3/4HP. I'm trying to understand the difference and which one is accurate representation of power consumption.

I need to upgrade my pumping capacity - current sump pump (approx. 2400 GPH @ 10ft) was overwhelmed last season. I am looking at the StormPro 1/2 HP or 3/4 HP pumps. I currently have 1 1/2" piping and wondered if you could tell me what the actual GPH on both of these StormPro pumps would be if I use a 2" to 1 1/2" adaptor at the base of discharge and is this adaptor provided with these pumps? Thanks!

Answer

The StormPro BA-33M 1/3HP pump will do 3000 GPH @ 10 feet and the model BA-50M 1/2HP pump will do 4200 GPH @ 10 feet. I wouldn't think you should need to increase your pumping capacity any more than that. Typically, if your current pump is not keeping up with the incoming water, you should only increase the HP by one size. As for the pumping capacity when reducing the 1/2HP BA-50M down to 1 1/2" discharge, you might try calling StormPro at (800) 323-1665 x231. Another option would be to add a BATTERY BACKUP SYSTEM. Most systems will activate should the water level in you pit rise to the level of the backup systems float switch to assist your primary pump and add extra pumping capacity if needed.
