I have owned this mower for the last 6 going on 7 years. I have beat on it and put it through hell. I am so impressed with the Kawasaki engine FJ180's sheer power, easy starting and ability to handle thick and tall grass/weeds.
The only downside has been the leaking plastic gas tank (common failure) which I replaced. Ariens designed the steel deck of this mower for high lift which makes repeated passes unnecessary. I will keep my Ariens until the wheels fall off... and then buy some new ones.
It is that good! Fantastic mower!

Use the right tool for the job

Ariens used to be one of the best mowers, however the company seems to be moving into trying to supply the cheaper home owner models.
For years the height adjustments have been wearing out and breaking, the bags don't even last a season, the transmissions slip in the rain and wear out quickly, the handles break of at the deck and the wheels wear quickly.
It is very expensive the fix the transmission and the bag alone cost $100. For commercial use a Honda is the best bet for this size mower.

Expert Response
Our web site clearly states that this unit is considered a Homeowner grade mower. They come with a 2 year Factory warranty, but only for Homeowner use, not Commercial applications. You are using the wrong tool for the job.
A push mower that will meet the day-in, day-out demands of a professional would need to be heavier duty, and more expensive, than a Homeowner model.
The Ariens Pro 21 (911271) has heavier duty components, and a slightly higher price tag than the Homeowner unit; but your investment will last longer without the expensive repairs.
