Decent Reel Mower For The Price
By Francisco D.

Review Posted 10/04/2022
This is my first powered reel mower, I used a McLane and that was my first choice, but it was a no-brainer to buy the Cali Trimmer because of the price and features. I only have 2 issues with the mower.
1. The speed of travel is way too fast for the speed of cut. I get a much better cut when I push it vs. using the power roller. Still trying to figure out a way to slow it down.
2. The catch can is nearly useless. I even bought the Reel Rollers catch can cover, but all the clippings flew over the top of it. I ended up bending the grass shield about 1" down, that deflected most of the clippings into the can. But, I still get a lot of clippings fly out over the left side over the can.
Other than that, the mower is great. It feels solid and the cut is great. It is slightly back heavy and it is obvious when using the power roller, as the front tends to jump with the slightest bumps on the turf. Slowing the speed of travel will allow you to slightly push on the handle keeping the mower planted on the ground.

Needs A Little Work ……

I LOVE my new 20” RL207H-GX120 (low cut) California Trimmer.
BUT, Even After paying $1250.00, and just one mowing, I knew I needed to make a few changes:
1. The handle was too low and was not good on the back. I am only 5’10”, and still needed this handle higher. I bought the 4” handle extension for $35.00 to correct this. Must have been made with a standard of a really short person.
2. The back propulsion wheel does not go high enough when disengaged. Seriously, may only go up an inch. I had an adjustable chain propulsion kit sent to me to allow it to go higher, only to find out it didn’t work with the 4” handle extension installed. I had to use a bolt to crimp the chain links, letting it raise higher. Still isn’t enough when you come to a sidewalk and need to raise the front of the mower a bit to clear the concrete edge. The look that this Jerry-Rigged bolt in the chain made my mower appear to be broken, with a quick fix, ugly solution. This rear propulsion wheel needs to be designed to raise much higher, clearing the rear of the mower. Without that, even when I disengage the wheel, it continues to spin with the blades and ends up tearing up my new Turf Bent Grass when I lift the front of the mower even a little bit.
3. The front wheels that came on the mower are not even close to being wide enough. There again, with the weight of the mower, it causes the front wheels to dig into the yard, making tracks. So, I purchased the 2 piece grooved front roller replacement for the front wheels after paying another $200.00 for this improvement. The grooved roller works great and eliminated the trenches that the original separate wheels were doing.
Needless to say, my wife and I were not happy with spending all this extra money after buying the new mower. I feel all the above improvements should be standard, add them to the mower price, and deliver a better product.
I do have to say, now with all this done, aside from the Jerry-Rigged chain bolt adjuster ordeal, I love the cut and look my new California Mower does on my new turf yard.

Grass catcher is useless
You definitely need to add the roller and handle extension.
Instructions are not that detailed

Seems to be very well built. Certainly took some getting used to, but I’m fairly comfortable with it after about three cuttings. It makes my zoysiagrass look amazing. The catch bin could use some work, which I plan to do, to keep the grass in. I think the trick is to not let your grass get too high between cuttings. It shines on straight-level areas but struggles a little on contours and in tight areas. So far, very pleased though.

It is absolutely the best mower for my Zoysa grass. My grass loves it and so do I. I’m 71 and when I was a kid I worked at a golf course mowing the tees and greens and this is a mower just like I used to use on the golf course and it brings back a lot of great memories. Well designed, and rugged as can be. Shipping was quick. Great company. Thank you

Worst Lawnmower I've Ever Owned
By John C.

Review Posted 07/27/2022
Someone recommended I buy this for my lawn so I purchased it. Is back heavy so the blade keeps lifting off the ground and giving a very uneven cut. This lawnmower cannot back up even just a little bit because of the self-propelled part. I’ve never been more dissatisfied with a product in my life. If you have zoysia grass it might be one of the only things you can use but I still would not recommend it under any circumstance.

Awesome Mower!!

Ordered this from MowersDirect, but this mower actually ships directly from California Trimmer. There was a slight delay/mistake in shipping but the guys from California Trimmer called me personally to apologize. Mower came nicely packaged and was basically ready to go out of the box. Highly recommended. One thing you may need to do is add a little more oil than the instructions tell you. Otherwise, the sensor in the engine will auto-shut off when mowing on an incline.

Love this mower. The Honda engine fires with the flick of my wrist. The roller bar is a must, and with it the mower makes great lines. I have Zeon Zoysia and all the guest that visit ask if I have a degree in golf course maintenance. Only minor complaint I have is that my back hurt the first few cuts. I’m only 5’7 but have considered buying the 4” extension to the handle. I think it has gotten better now that I’m used to it (I’m just out of shape, haha). Super happy with this mower.
