Manufacturer Review
Versatility & Power Means Faster & Easier Yard Work
By Greg P.
Champion Champion Power Equipment Category Manager (Chipper-Shredder)
Review Posted 11/26/2018
We designed, this 3-inch chipper-shredder to be much more lightweight than similar machines so that it’s both easy to use and powerful. The 2-bushel collection bag simplifies cleanup or mulch application, plus we know that our Champion customers appreciate the opportunity to repurpose wood chips into usable and attractive mulch.

Gets The Job Done, So Far!
By Benjamin W.

This is a high-quality chipper shredder at the 3-inch branch level. The shoot makes it hard to put curved branches through even if they are 2 inches in diameter. I managed to jam it a few times and had to unbolt it to take the branches out, but that is a safety feature.
The starting mechanism is a little rough, it usually takes me a couple of attempts to start it, but so far, it has started every time.
Overall, I was expecting a little more when I upgraded by chipper, but it was the right price, so I would say that I am satisfied.

This works great and gives small chips that wood degrade to soil much faster.

Getting The Job Done
By Daniel M.

I just bought an 1-acre property with a lot of trees and years of fallen pine needles. It's my first time using/buying a chipper, so can't really compare to others. This chipper is doing the job we need. It will work on fresh-cut limbs, but the drier the wood the better. When the wood is dry it chips fast and small. The reduction of waste is great, huge piles reduced to a 55-gallon bag. I would recommend it.

The champion chipper shredder gives you more bang for the buck. I have used it time and time again, and it goes through branches and small shrubs no problem, and is a must if you have trees on your property.

Excellent Investment!

Today was the first day of use. I found it difficult getting the machine started, after that it did do a good job, chipping & shredding as advertised. Early days yet! After an hour or so working, there was a clog in the shredding chute that will be addressed tomorrow. So far so good, with the quality and presentation of the machine.
The machine was a lot heavier than I expected, maybe better balance could be considered. I am a senior (but active) found it quite a task to move it about.

The chipper did not live up to its hype. It stalls out with the smallest of limbs.

Not what I thought it would be. It's tough to operate and puts your arms at risk while using trying to constantly force and push things down inside the shoot. Many parts keep falling off and vs. sending the item back, I find myself taking apart and fixing things properly. I love the Champion name but really dislike this machinery.

This item was back ordered for a few weeks but I ordered this model because of the higher ccs. I needed a chipper/shredder that would not let me down when shredding a brush pile all day. My husband put the machine together, taking his time, with complete assembly within two hours. It does come with a bag but we wanted to do a major job and did not use the bag. We did test the unit using the bag and it worked perfectly for a small job. The key is to allow the machine to run a while before engaging to chip or shred. We chipped up to 2" limbs all day long with no problem. We did have some 3" limbs that the side chute handled with no problem.
For a non-commercial machine, this chipper still does a good job. We have used it on two occasions with a run time of around five hours at each time and we encountered no problems. We do take our time with the larger limbs and that has enabled a smooth operation, so far. The instructions are straightforward and the large wheels are easy to roll. After we finish chipping and shredding, we allow the machine time to cool off. We do not turn the engine off right away. We always let it run for a few minutes before cutting the machine off. This machine was worth waiting for. The pull start is easy to operate also. I hope to have this machine for years to come.

Great Chipper/Shredder For The Home Gardener
By Abbott G.

This is the 4th chipper/shredder I've owned. The last was a John Deere which finally died after 21 years. They don't make it anymore. The Champion 338cc is almost the same as the John Deere but works even better. It has great suction to bring leaves into the hopper. It starts easily. It shreds and chips great.
It is as big and powerful as you can get and still be able to haul it around the yard by hand. It is heavy but manageable. It is solidly constructed.
The only minor downside is the debris bag. While adequate, I would like it to be a bit bigger making fewer trips to empty it. However, if the leaves are wet or starting to decompose a bigger bag makes it too heavy to fill all the way and the bag supplied is OK. The other potential downside which might not be a problem is getting to the blades and hammers to sharpen them. I haven't needed to open the flywheel compartment yet. It might be a bit tough, although the John Deere wasn't too easy.
I looked online and first purchased a Bearcat SC3208 which is a piece of junk at twice the price. No suction. The leaves take forever to go down. It also has a belt drive to the flywheel which has to be engaged after the engine is started. Nowhere on their website or on their product description is this mentioned or shown. The Champion has a direct drive as did all the other machines I've owned.
