Installing the 5952 Wireless Monitor
By Richard C.

Review Posted 02/01/2013
About 6 months ago I installed a new Generac 22KW Quiet Source generator, with a block heater, and battery heater. The battery charger runs on the same circuit as the battery heater, and the 1500 watt block heater is on a separate 20 amp circuit breaker.

For some reason, one of them tripped and when the generator was needed it would not start - dead battery. It would be helpful to have indicator lights on the outside of the generator to show battery charging, etc. I walk past the generator several times a day and in the winter you can usually hear the block heater, but if it has cycled off you aren't sure, and I go in and check the breakers. We heat with an outdoor boiler and if the power drops off, the boiler is not happy.

So I decided to buy the wireless indoor monitor. The signal has to penetrate a metal building, so I hoped there was enough cable to go from the generator to the building and through the exterior metal siding. There was, by not using the attachment clamp, and instead taping the two cables together and running them horizontally out the back of the unit (through a hole in the door). I had just enough extra to allow opening the rear door and opening the connection if/when I need to service the battery.

The directions are so bad they are comical (they seem to try to cover every model ever made). But it went very well, and the monitor found the generator and all is working well. It will be nice to be able to check on the generator without having to open the front panel outside when it is below zero.

Excellent generator. It's so quiet we hardly notice when it's running compared to the one it replaced.

Great packaging. Logical control panel. Clean design. Very convenient battery location. Would be nice to have access to oil filler cap through top of unit.

Very, Very Pleased

I upgraded from the 5501 8kw model to the 22kw, 1800 rpm Quietsource. Generator got here within 4 days (Texas), in good shape, ready to go. I am very pleased with that.

In my opinion, there is no comparison to the 3600 rpm and the 1800 rpm units. You can just feel it working less at the lower rpm as you listen to it.

I have put about 30 hours on it so far, and am very, very pleased with the overall performance. There is easy access to both sides, (the oil filler cap is in a bad place, but I guess it couldn't be helped) lots of room to work on it.

The unit sounds like about a 5 ton HVAC unit, not very loud at all, and the noise it does make is not "offensive", meaning it is just a nice, quiet hum.

Waiting on the Nexus Remote Controller to come out... let me know. I understand they are coming out in Q2 2010.

As I mentioned, this is my second unit to buy from EGD, and I have recommended them to all my friends. Never a problem once. That's kind of rare, these days!
